It's where the 60mm mark is - it goes in and out from there and at the 50mm point it gets a bit stiffer from there to 35mm. It's been heavily used, though optically fine, and it did get a bit better with use. I suspect it had lain around a while unused.
My 28-80 has a similar arrangement but it's like new in useage terms and is dead smooth in action.
