No 407947 dates it to 1937

it shows some thin cleaning scratches on the front element

otherwise it seems good, no haze fungus or separations

fucussing is smooth but quite stiff

the aperture ring is very stiff tho, too stiff in fact

i'm not quite sure how to proceed yet

i would be grateful for pointers to a good Summar rebuild guide, or any sensible tips pls

First of all, try CRS at Luton for making it better, but I think they may take a while to do it. I think their website shows a Summar being dismantled. It probably won't be a cheap job but could be money well spent if you're interested in how pre-war lenses perform.

A nice clean Summar will come as a revelation to those who've read how 'inferior' to a contemporary Sonnar it's supposed to be. Some were coated by Leitz in the 1950s, I think, but most of the coated ones found in UK will have been done by independent firms. I once had one that had been re-polished, coated and adjusted by the Jason Adams Co. and I was pretty much taken aback at how good it was. Another one I should have kept !

Any good lens of historical value deserves to be serviced by someone that knows what they are doing.
The RFForum should have the info as to who to trust with it.

site seems down for repair, but this seems to be the relevant page http://www.angelfire.com/biz/Leica/summar.html

and here is a rather 'bling' cutaway view of a Summar
excellent innit
