I picked up a Hexanon AR 57mm F1.4 lens today but after I got it home I discovered the aperture is not seeming to work
properly. If you push the rear lever to open up the diaphram, the lever gets stuck in the open postion and the lense will
not stop down when the lever is released. Is this an easy fix and is this lens any good?

Lens is good, fixing is easy only to experienced repair man. Clean blades not an average DIY work, I think less expensive to buy another lens.

Yeah, I think I will just scrap it. Its only good for shooting wide open which is very limiting. Good thing I only paid
$15 for it but it was MY mistake for not checking it better before I bought it.

You can sell for 30 or more with stuck aperture.

Ive looked at it a little more closely and I can now see the problem, oil on the blades.

Yes, that is usual reason. I have many Konica almost all in many variants, one of my 1.4 also stuck wide open, from dozen lens only one and same than yours, may they did use some easy melt grease.

I just had one, and it had very lazy blades, they moved, but they were evidently sticky.
I managed to clean it, but I can't remember how hard it was.

Anyway it's a lovely lens, my most used 50 on my nex.

Maybe is not that difficult, I've cleaned many lenses with oil on the blades without total disassembly, obviously you need to have acces to the iris so all the glass must be taken out.

I used isopropanol to clean the blades several times until i felt the iris was working correctly. In my experience none of the lenses i've cleaned have shown oily blades again.

If you are planing to scrap it it might be worth trying that instead.

I cleaned my AR 50/1.7 aperture blades from oil, which was quite easy (I have taken a few other lenses apart, so not a total beginner). Once all the lens elements were out, I dropped some naphta straight onto the (still assembled) aperture blades and opened/closed them a couple of times while blowing with a Giottos rocket to speed up the evaporation. Once the smell of petroleum disappeared, indicating complete evaporation, I put it back together. Not having to disassemble the aperture mechanism at all is a great benefit, they can be a pain to reassemble...
