Read reviews on Amazon.com , interesting.
Another alternative, perhaps better...

Although I haven't used the Sony GPS, I made a few attempts at "geotagging" pictures and I must say it is very simple and very useful sometimes.
In addition to Robogeo (above) I used some other freeware programs that I am not going to list here as I have already done so in this topic
Any GPS receiver that can be connected to a PC (or Mac) can be used.
If needed, you can convert your tracklog to GPX format using GPS babel (free). _________________ Pentax K10D+ grip.

As the subject of the topic is "Sony GPS-CS1", I just want to add that this piece of equipment is probably very nice to have if one does not already have a GPS receiver. In addition, the software that Sony associated to the GPS is probably doing all the transfers by itself, hence a very simple use...
As far as I know, the GPS-CS1 can also be used to record a tracklog, but you cannot know where you are with it, as it has no screen.
I just happen to have a receiver I use when hiking so I gave it a try and I was not disappointed.
When available, that's a very convenient solution, as you can use the receiver for more than geotagging pictures. _________________ Pentax K10D+ grip.

Which model are you using?
I am completely ignorant of the subject
I would like to have one that is sure to work with Robogeo _________________ _

I'm using a Magellan Meridian Platinum. They are not on sale anymore as the whole range has been replaced by the "Explorist" range.
Among the Explorist models, only the "100" cannot be connected to a PC/Mac.
I am not familiar with Garmin, but I know for sure they have some very good models as well.
Whatever trademark you choose, you'll need computer connectivity features (either USB or COM port), and if you plan to save a lot of different routes or waypoints, a SD card connector is a plus.
Other than that, I would say it all depends on your budget
Feel free to send me a message if you want more information, I might be able to help! _________________ Pentax K10D+ grip.

I think Sony GPS CS1 is a waste of money.
It is a brilliant idea but GPS unit inside is not on par with current GPS units.
Also you can get out of satellite view very easily if you use the supplied carabin and attach it to your backpack etc so it is not practical as advertised.
Supplied software is very good on the other hand.
I have the sony unit, built an adaptor to fit it to the flash rail on the camera which made it very usable but I use my PDA gps for geotagging most of the time.
It can find sattelites even in my pocket, has mapping and navigation capabilities, I use it as a phone, PDA etc and recharge it even in my car.
Noni GPS plot is the software I use in PDA. I record the track logs in txt format and when transferring log files to my pc I modify them with MS word and add required string (just google it) to make them compatible with sony software.
I believe if you search the net you can find better software for geotagging. |

If you have a PDA you can buy a bluetooth GPS and use the PDA to connect to the gps and record the data, then download to the pc and use robogeo. I don't know of any software in particular for PDAs, but there must be plenty of options. _________________ Gear: Canon EOS 400D, Yashica FX-70, Contax 139Q, Canon EF-M,

Hi,
there are loads of options indeed. On my PDA (Windows Mobile based) I use both NoniGPSPLot and VisualGPSce... Both can record tracks, but NoniGPSPlot can convert/save them in several formats and display the tracks. VisualGPS is simpler, with less graphics, but does the job very well. It's actually the one I use the most.

Actually I think this one is a clear winner for anybody who is not equipped already. It does what the Sony gps does, AND is able to communicate in realtime with a computer (through a cable, no bluetooth apparently) that can then be used as a display. More versatile that Sony's product and it can store a lot of data...
One drawback though : the only format compatible with the software is jpg.
Some other softwares can deal with a lot more formats. GpsPhoto and ExifTool do, I am not familiar with Robogeo but I am quite sure it does as well.
The reason why it is important to me is because I edit exif data directly in my raw files so all the data is there from the start... GPS coordinates of course, but also aperture, name and caracteristics of the lens, copyright,...etc. _________________ Pentax K10D+ grip.
