Hello there!

I recently got a nice Soligor 60-300 4-5.6. It has a few problems like a few specks of dust, but I'm more concerned about a scratch inside. It looks like this.http://imgur.com/wMDIWYC

It goes all across the lens with some curves in between. Any idea if that's something serious like infection or "just" a scratch made during "a repair"? Otherwise it's a pretty good lens and I cannot see any optical influence of that scratch or whatever it is.

--edit
It looks like I cant post or link to images. Can I work around it somehow?

Your images will not show up in your first post to the forum. Try posting it a second time and it should appear.

1. Stop thinking of specks of dust as a problem. They are not. Even when there's quite a bit of them. Even clumps of dirt often aren't. Look up lensrentals article on extracting a dead fly out of a lens. Or google up a discussion on hazed M-Rokkors.

2. Your picture is not large/sharp enough to say with any degree of certainty what is that that you have there but it does not feel like a scratch - scratches rarely have such complicated shapes. That being said, brassing on the retaining ring suggests that someone [not quite capable] was in there.

Welcome rhph!

Nice lens.

Echo others -- not to worry; use it as is; there shouldn't be any effect, except...

Scratch will cause flare if light hits lens surface at the correct angle(s). Sometimes the element can be rotated to change the flare angle to a more convenient position.

Is the scratch on the outer surface? Can you feel it with fingernail? Fill with black ink to minimize flare.

Disassemble of such a complicated multiple element multiple helical zoom lens is probably not for the inexperienced...

Thanks for all the replies!
I tried to get better shot of that scratch but it's quite difficult. Scratched lens is located in the middle of the body so it's not easy to manipulate with light (torch) in one hand and camera in the other to get it visible.
Last weekend I took quite a few photos with it and I can see only a few dust specks(small and blurry) on one or two photos(sky mostly), but I know where to look Wink No scratch visible though.

So, after taking a few photos with this lens I can say that I like it. A lot! And I hope I will get better at focusing, ha!

You certain they are not on the sensor?

Well, I bought a very cheap Vivitar 135mm f2.8 where the owner thought that it was a hair or something, but it really is a nasty scratch probably made by someone who "serviced" the lens .. Except for this the lens is in "mint" (haha) condition. It is on the second element ... It doesn't seem to show up much on the pictures ... ok for $ 16.5 (€ 15) I don't feel ripped off too much Wink

They're not visible on my kit lens so I'm pretty sure Smile

To check for sensor dust stop down lens to maximum, make picture of sky -- sensor dust will show in image especially if contrast is increased.
