Ok, I resurrect this thread because two days ago I took this one in the late afternoon, handheld, with my usual Hanimex 400/6.3 (EDIT: 1/800 sec, f/6.3, ISO 400 on Canon 60D):

Last months lunar eclipse

Olympus Zuiko 300mm F/4.5 on OM-D E-M5. Consider it a 2D slice of a 4d image. this was the only way I could come up with to composite them using a single shadow orientation while keeping the moon in the same orientation as it was relative to me.

Not the best test of the lens, full moons are pretty flat. I should go out in the next couple of nights and really put it to the test.

That's pretty amazing for hand held. At least for me, I can't hand hold for shots like that.

"me too" usually, I was surprised of the result. I was against a wall, I tried to set focus using live view and then shoot using viewfinder.

There's some impressive moon shots in this thread. And most impressive is - the fact that expensive, specialist, equipment isn't needed. I shall drag out the big old Slik tripod ( aka 'the scaffolding' ) and one of my 300's.

Does local light pollution make a great deal of difference ?

In fact, this is what I used (the top one, the rest is for comparison Smile ). BTW it is a kind gift by iangreenhaigh, with some small amount of fungus I never tried to remove. I tried it even doubled with a cheap 2x, but there is not much more detail and it is much more difficult to control.
Regarding pollution: I'm not able to tell much, I'm in a relatively clean area. The last picture has been taken in the afternoon, in a nice sunny yet cold day.

I took some Super Moon shots some years ago and I cannot tell the differences from reqular moon shots. Here is the last moon shot I took; it was taken some time ago, but I don't think I posted it here:

Here you are with a couple of oldish pictures (actually it is the same picture resized and cropped). Taken with a strange combo: Century Tele Athenar II 650mm plus Leica 1,4x Apo converter plus Oly 1,4x 4/3 converter plus FT to MFT adapter plus E-PL1 body (EFL 2600mm). Manfrotto 055 + 322 head as main support, the secondary (sturdy) support was the steel grating of my window.

I love to take pictures of the Moon, I took hundreds, but this one is the best result I could achieve so far.

Super impressive! Looks like something taken with a telescope!

NEX-7 & EF 400/5.6L
Not the best of shots, it's not a super-moon, the 400 and all my AF glass is now long gone, it was my longest lens, what to replace it with?

Shot to be proud of! Very high resolution indeed. Though I'm not sure how easy it is for most of us to get the same setup in motion! Talk about tinkering Wink

Not real sure how I could have missed this thread. I too like taking moon pics and I'm glad to see another Century Tele Athenar II user (feruccio and his spectacular pics of the half moon with his 650mm f/6.8 + teleconverters).

I don't recall using teleconverters with my Century Tele Athenars, but apparently I did because there's a shot below taken with my CPO 650 + a Nikon TC14a. Anyway, here is an assortment of mine. No known super moon pics, although I do recall viewing it last August with the naked eye and wondering what all the fuss was about. (with my naked eye I couldn't tell a difference)

I have taken moon shots with a variety of equipment over the years. Here is a comparison of the crescent moon I made between my Century Tele Athenar II 500mm f/5.6 (@ f/8 ) and my Tamron 55BB 500mm f/8 mirror -- a suprisingly good optic, which borders on a refractor in terms of contrast:

Here's a pic of the full moon using my CPO 500mm f/5.6 @ f/8:

Here's a pic of the full moon with my CPO 650mm f/6.8 @ f/11:

And a pic with the CPO 650mm + a Nikon TC14a:

Moonrise of a blood-red moon with my CPO 650mm. Shot taken at ISO 800 with my Canon XS (ISO 800 is very noisy with that camera). I had to use ISO 800 because I was getting motion blur (from the moon's movement) at slower shutter speeds and lower ISO values:

And a half-moon shot with my old Meade 10" LX3 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. What a beast that old scope was (10" diameter mirror, about 20" long), but it did take good pics. Nikon F2, Tri-X 400 film.

In addition to the above photos, there are a few more I would like to take that I haven't yet. Sadly, I took no moon pics with my Canon FD 400mm f/4.5 before it was stolen. But I have others still. I haven't tried out my Tamron 300mm f/2.8 LDIF yet. I'll probably use at least one teleconverter behind it. Maybe I'll stack a couple, see how they work out. I've determined through other tests that the Tamron 200-500mm f/5.6 zoom is actually a very sharp optic, so I'd like to give mine a try-out as well. I also haven't taken a full-moon image yet with my Tamron 55BB 500mm f/8 mirror; something I'd like much to do. And finally, I'd like to give it a try with my Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror, see if it can measure up to the Tamron mirror.

Maybe this is a naive question - but I'll ask anyway. Does the moon look 'upside down' in Australia compared to Britain?

^ I believe you answer is yes. The Moon should be flipped.

Here are some of my recent attempts with manual-focus lenses aimed at the Moon.

Konica Hexanon AR 300mm f/3.5 EE.
IMHO, pretty good detail for a 300mm.

That Konica does a surprisingly good job for a 300mm. That must be one helluva lens.
