I just saw one of these sell on ebay for $16. It occurred to me that I haven't used mine since I got my NEX, so I took it out todayt for a few quick snaps around the yard. All with NEX-5N; first one stopped down a little, the others wide open.

We just can't seem to get rid of them.

In the hands of skilled photographers, the close-up potential of this lens is shown to its best advantage.

That is NOT a $16 lens, unless you happen to be the lucky buyer! Great pictures from both of you, it's a good lens.

I have the earlier 3.5/135 version in M39 LTM. It's a good lens, sharp wide open, very sharp at f8. Where it falls down though is in the coating - it has low contrast and flares like hell. Some CA on bright highlights but all non-APO 135s have, certainly my Canon Serenar 3.5/135 in M39, Zeiss Opton Sonnar 4/135 in Contax RF and Schneider Tele-Xenar 4/135 in Altix, which are all contemporary with this Komura have similar slight CA.

Yes, the coating(s) doesn't do much.
I have to be careful when to use this lens.
Overcast days are its forte, or shoot from the shade.

Agreed. Also, it's easy to fix contrast in Photoshop.

You're using it well, oldhand. That last shot is very Komura.

Funny, I have several of these and I had no flare problems.
Using a hood ?

PostPosted: Mon Dec 01, 2014 4:40 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

No, don't have a hood to fit it.

The flare can be quite severe if the sun isn't behind your back:

I keep a collection of adapter rings.
You can get quite a variety these days.
Highly recommended.
Very helpful. I can put a hood on nearly anything.
Absolutely necessary on lenses of this vintage I find.

That is nice ~ especially the portrait.
Sometimes I'm not quick enough for those situations.

Thank you.
Yes, photographing children with a manual focus lens at widest aperture is a real challenge, and there can be a lot of failures.
You can get lucky if you do it often enough Smile
I have a real soft spot for Komuras, because of the way they render.
This lens is an old favourite

There are at least two versions of the Sankyo Kohki Komura 135mm f2.8.
The one that I used is the Sankyo Kohki Super Komura Uni Auto.
It is one of the Komura Unidapter range and has Komura's version of the Tamrom Adaptall type system.
Mine is fitted with a Petri bayonet adapter, but it could just as easily have a Canon FD, Nikon F, Minolta SRT etc

The other Komura is a simple pre-set lens with Komura's version of T mount. Mine is M42
Both are excellent, but they clearly have different optics, as the distance from front to rear element at infinity is markedly different.
It would be interesting to know the optical arrangement of each.

Here are some pictures
Where both are shown, the Unidapter model is the one at the top
