Rolf, you made me think today ...

Rolf showed a landscape photograph today
(from his todays morning walk) which made me think.
It was done at f5.6 ... the reflections in the lake
got a nice soft bokeh-touch which I liked a lot
I realized I heardly ever use wide appertures
for landscapes, it's just a stupid habbit.
Further I thought how to combine wide
appertures use with panorama technic to
reach results which would not be possible with
standard wide angle primes.

shortly: my idea was to take a portrait lens with a
very wide apperture. Another need: it has to be
razorsharp at it's open position, though still useable
for landscape purposes wide open. all the frames
of the pano are shot wide open. the scene should
be captured in a normal windeangle view.
The outcome is a (about) 20mm shot with a
apperture wich is normally not possible,
cause of lens-apperture-limitations and
without lens distortions.

here's the result of my evenings-walk from today ...

- lens: SMC Tak 50/1.4
- all frames ( 8 ) of the pano shot wide open

I can imagine that the effect would be much bigger
if I would have gone closer to the trees and if Pentax
would have finally a fullframe camera Smile

Cheers
Tobias

Curious, a lot of people seems to be discovering this technique these days.
Another member came to this discovery some days ago. Maybe the tutorial published some days ago on Facebook's Photoshop page has something to do with it? Wink

Your pano are always the top of what we see on this forum, Tobbsman, but in this case, I don't like much the blurred trees in the foreground. The technique may prove still useful sometimes for landscapes, but maybe with different subjects, where the blurred objects are better lit and not so prominent to occupy 1/3rd of the picture space.

I think the biggest advantage of using a standard lens to
shoot the equivalent angle of a wide lens, is that you get
the perspective of the normal lens.

You can compress the distance and put emphasis on the distant objects.
And minimize distortion of course.

The following panorama (3 rows by 3 cols) was shot at 70mm.
Had I used a 24mm lens, the Acropolis would be almost invisible.

@Orio
that's funny and interesting same time ... do you have links? (i dont have an facebook account) i am curious how other people use this technic and see their open-apperture-panorama-results ...

@nkanellopoulos
I think the biggest advantage of using a standard lens to
shoot the equivalent angle of a wide lens, is that you get
the perspective of the normal lens

exactly!

but another big advantage not to forget:
because of a 1.4 apperture I could shoot in this evening light conditions with ISO100 and a very safe shutter speed. Concerning panorama shooting a safe shutter speed is a real need.

Hi Tobbsman it`s an interesting idea to use the bokeh pano tec to capture a landscape. I was playing with this on the last days too but I doscovered the mentioned facebook page after I made my first tests.

Here is the thread I started a few days ago:

hey thanks timo for the links, ... cool experiment with the women portrait, looks interresting.

I will for sure make more experiments on large-scale landscapes.
Bokeh pano is great for near objects, but with landscape scenes it could probably give a lot new to discover. Especially with the idea of using them very open. Unfortunately my SMC 50/1.2 is too soft to use for landscapes wide open, so the only lens in my possession is the 50/1.4 which gives some bokeh too and wich is really sharp wide open.

here some "normal" bokeh panos which I made last year (with close objects though, or just a tele lens):
