I too find the 43-86 Ai quite ok, contrary to the rumors. Later (Ai) copies are supposed to be improved over the earlier (non-Ai) ones; I own two late s/n copies so I can't tell about the older version's qualities.
Have you checked this out: http://forum.mflenses.com/nikkor-43-86-t40123.html ?

I have both old and newer versions, not bad at all especially for the $$`paid... give it a try.

Bokeh looks fine to me, just more artistic than many seem to want.

Thanks for the bokeh shot.

I have to say it looks interesting and for the price well worth to be explored.

This is a decent lens and well worth finding - especially for the price they go for.
Here are some images taken at a mixture of apertures and FL's.
You can easily tell those taken at wide open aperture.
OH

Here are some samples from me with this lens:

It's a fine lens, IMO. It's one of those steady and reliable performers that does a consistent and reliable job across the range. Fun fact, as a reverse-mounted macro lens, it's awesome.

I have the NAI version. I've actually had two of them. The second had a bunch of front element scratches and it still performed well.

I also always heard bad things about this lens, though often it was the odd focal length range that was called out over image quality. Great samples, looking forward to seeing more.

You know how to paint with Bokeh, berhardas. Great photos, especially the last 2!

Thanks.

I totally digress but this lens reminds me of my haggis experience. So many people said it would be horrible. When I first tried it myself, it was just quite bland and normal. Very Happy
I was a bit disappointed as the predicted horridness was not there.
This lens is solid middle of the road. I can not really see why it has that reputation?

So your review is, this is the haggis of lenses? Lol.
