Hi guys
I just pulled a trigger on new Helios 40-2 in "F" ...should be here in 3 weeks . just have a kind of silly question ...did search on Google trying to figure it out ..but decided , that asking asking people , that actually have on hand experience would be a better idea . From what I've seen written about this lens is that might be a good idea to get a hood for it. O.K...here is the question lol...what length do you guys use or recommend ? From what I know...correct me if I'm wrong...85mm in mid-tele ..so it's in between normal and tele hoods I see sold all over the place. The reason I'm asking this is to get proper length to perform and not to cause vignette . Any suggestions..or better links to vendors sites would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I would think any hood for 50-80mm should be fine with little chance of vignetting.
But if I remember correctly it has an odd thread diameter, so I'll let those that have sought out hoods give you the useful answers. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...

I have a Helios 40 and it has 66mm filter thread. I had to find a step up ring to change it to 67mm in order to use the hood. I'm using a collapsible rubber hood, which works fine for me. It's convenient for carrying around and you can change the size easily. But as far as I know, only Helios 40 has the 66mm filter thread, and Helios 40-2 has 67mm filter thread, which is easy for finding a suitable hood. Maybe you need to double check if this Helios has 66mm filter thread.
In this case, there is only one guy who sells the 66-67mm step up ring on ebay. You can contact him to request another one if it's not available (I did that, he made plenty of rings)
Here is the link on ebay for the ring

and here is for the hood I bought, you can easily find the similar ones

Before I got one of those 66-67mm step up rings linked above, I bought a deep 67mm hood for medium format. Something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/67mm-Lens-Hood-Shade-for-Medium-Format-120-Camera-New-/130536906715?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e649b1fdb
It was the type that clamps onto the barrel via a rubber ring and screw. It fits alot better over the 67mm step up ring now and I'm sure its something you can look into for your Helios 40-2 and blocks out stray light sources quite well.
How you deal with the increased overall impression of size is up to you. _________________ My Gear and Other Ramblings :: http://filmlensaddict.blogspot.ca/ |
