The other day I have found a list with prices from 1968 (of course in Deutschmark). One kilo of bread was about DM 1.30 (today it's about € 4,-).

These prices do not tell everything about a lens, but they can tell us where a lens was placed by the manufacturer.

CZJ Flektogon 4/20: DM 630,-
CZJ Flektogon 4/25: DM 396,-
CZJ Flektogon 2.8/35: DM 369,-
CZJ Sonnar 4/135: DM 297,-*

Meyer Lydith 3.5/30: DM 149,-
Meyer Orestor 2.8/135: DM 198,-

Enna Ennalyt 4/24: DM 297,-
Enna Ennalyt 3.5/28: 147,-
Enna Tele-Ennalyt 2.8/135: DM 168,-

Isco Isconar 4/135: DM 129,-

Schacht S-Travegon 2.8/35: DM 325,-
Schacht Travenar 3.5/135: DM 254,-

Schneider Variogon 2.8/45-100: DM 1023,-

Very interesting is the comparison of 50ish mm lenses:
(in order of price)

Kilfitt Makro-Kilar 2.8/40: DM 376,-
Schacht S-Travelon 1.8/50: DM 282,-
Schacht Makro-Travenar 2.8/50: DM 254,-
CZJ Pancolar 2.0/50: DM 222,-
Schacht Travenar 2.8/50: DM 196,-
CZJ Tessar 2.8/50: DM 189,-*
Isco Iscotar 2.8/50: DM 120,-
Meyer Domiplan 2.8/50: DM 99,-*
Ludwig Meritar 2.8/50: DM 55,-* (!!)

And some so-called "portait lenses"...

CZJ Pancolar 1.4/75: DM 545,-
Schacht Travenar 2.8/90: DM 254,-
Meyer Trioplan 2.8/100: DM 216,-*
Schacht Travegar 3.3/100: DM 168,-
Enna Ennalyt 2.8/90: DM 159,-
Isco Iscnoar 4/100: DM 96,-

(*) These are the lenses from this list that I own.

Carsten

That's a great list and you are right - the comparative prices say a lot about the market positioning (and perhaps quality?)

I gave only a quick look and it seems that the ranking of the lenses is more or less the same as today.
(I am of course unable to talk about the absolute value).

Fascinating list. I've never seen a Schacht lens, are there many around? And what's the rough conversion factor of DM/Euros Carsten?

I have a Schacht Travenar 90R/2.8, which came cheaply in a bundle and which I've not got around to really trying out yet - must do it soon. In its day it was supposed to be a good portrait lens. I'm surprised to see it's position on Carsten's list there - maybe it's as good as its price suggests, who knows.

and, wow, Kilfitt Makro-Kilar 2.8/40? 4th place on highest priced prime

1 € = 1,956 DM

http://www.der-euro.de/euro2/euroum.html

"One kilo of bread was about DM 1.30 (today it's about € 4,-)."
So that is a price increase of about 600%!
Transferred to the lenses that would mean that the Tessar 2.8/50 today would cost about € 580,- ! Shocked

Following this price list, there seems to have been a kind of "ranking" for the most valuable lenses:

1. Kilfitt
2. Schneider
2. Carl Zeiss Jena
4. Schacht
6. Isco (with a considerable gap between 4. and 6.)
6. Meyer
7. Enna
8. Ludwig

I don't think so.

Here are some (EXA bayonet, perhaps a reason to buy an EXA-EOS-adapter)

CZJ Sonnar 4/135: DM 297,-* [i][u] That is the best buy on the list, I think (price/quality)

Is it possible to show the list (scan?) it is really interesting.

Nice information. Weird is that the CZJ Flek 20/4 is more expensive than the CZJ Pancolar 75/1.4 because as I know the last one was made in much more less copies (together with the Pancolar 55/1.4, the kit lens of the Pentacon Super SLR).

CZJ Pancolar 1.4/75: DM 545,-

I really wish to see any copy from this lens.

My scanner is not connected at the moment, but here is a quick shot (with a digital compact, fair enough, I guess):

Kilfitt also had kind of a high price I guess, but I've read that it was a rather elite maker - scoring some "histories first" the first production zoom lens for example. Supplying to the army, they surely were well off financially Smile An interesting read - http://www.kilfitt.org/Biography.htm

As for Schacht, I read on some german forum an explanation of how Leica outsourced some lens production to them in the 50's or 60's. So I guess they were a good enough manufacturer Smile

Interesting list, thanks for sharing
