Since I am preparing a teacher's teacher class about photo freeware, I have dealt with a couple of applications.

I can recommend those two freeware programmes for post production:

Paint.Net

GimpShop (a GIMP GUI that resembles Photoshop)

I can emphatically endorse the Gimpshop recommendation. The only limitation is the ability to looad plugins on a Mac.

High Dynamic Range software.

HDR Shop - Version 1 is free for the taking.

Which is just as well, because ver2 is 400usd.

Hi Michael, thanks for the pointer!
Do you know if 2.4 is already 16bit per channel?. Until 2.3 it was 8bit only.
Thanks again!
Best regards,
Jes.

It is still 8bit. According to the FAQ they will begin to implement 16bit support after this release. But one great step forward is the support of color profiles.
Here are some release notes with screenshots of new tools and features: http://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.4.html
I've tested the new "foreground select tool" - *wow*, this is working very good, similar to the well known growcut-mask plugin for photoshop.

I'm using UFraw with GIMP. Easy to use and works well on my slow computer.

Hi Flor,
I tried Cinepaint for a while, but it's quite unstable in the current status...

Best regards,
Jes.

In another thread I have read about FSViewer, so I downloaded it and tried it.
This is an excellent PhotoViewer (and you can even download it as a mobile version to use it with your USB memory stick.)
FSV show Canon RAW files!

XNview is another great freeware photoviewer, available on many plateforms... even on Pocket PC, on which it can handle most RAW formats (crw, cr2, pef, nef, raw) !

Thanks much about FSViewer! It is a joy to use, so much better than
Picasa, Windows Viewer, and a few others I've tried.
