Very interesting !
This lens hasn't got good reviews, it seems.

Such as in Pentax Forums

http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-Takumar-6x7-300mm-F4-Lens.html

So it is quite affordable.

I just recently bought a 6x7 camera and have slowly been adding lenses to the outfit. I wanted to get a 300mm, but I was talked out of it by the folks over at the pentax forum. They were telling me that, even with the mirror locked up, the shutter set up enough of a vibration to blur images. But that's obviously at low light levels or very small aperture values. Now, after seeing these great photos, I wish I wouldn't have let them talk me out of it. I bought a 200mm instead and it's also an excellent lens.

bernhardas is right, though -- the prices are down on 6x7 optics right now, except for the more unusual or exotic ones. I paid about $100 for my 200mm -- bought it from Robert's Camera out of Indianapolis. They sell a lot of stuff on eBay, but they also have an extensive line of Pentax 67 stuff, so often I'll just go to their website to look around. Better selection than KEH, to be honest.

So, bernhardas, what film were you using? The color appears to be very natural and the grain virtually non-existent.

It looks like a fine lens for digital use too.
A good 300/4 for $100 is a great deal.

Interesting look. Looks sharp to me wide open.

Thank you, Bernhardas, for an informative post and nice pictures documenting your findings.

I have two Pentax 6x7 and two Pentax 645N cameras and have been wanting to buy this lens for some time (I cannot afford/justify the more modern ED version at this time), but the bad reviews on Pentax Forums have held me back. When I found this lens at a particularly attractive price, I succumbed to temptation, however, and bought one and I don't regret it. You are right that it is heavy and lacks a tripod mount. The minimum focusing distance could also have been shorter, but so far I haven't found sharpness to be a problem on the 6x7 (it's intended format).

Here is a picture (scanned from the negative on a cheap Canon flatbed scanner) taken with this lens on the Pentax 6x7. I am fairly pleased with the result and glad that I added this lens to my arsenal.
