The thing is that with the present set-up, I cannot get infinity on my 40D nor on my 5D.
I cannot even use the infinity setting on the 5D, since the mirror hits the rear part of the lens body.

Still, some kind of photography is possible:

1. 5D

100& crop

2. 5D

100% crop

3. 40D

100% crop

It's a pretty good lens, but it doesn't catch up with the Leicas, esp. at f/2.8.

OK, the Summicron is stopped down one stop and the Rolleinar is wide open and the Summicron is a top-class lens. Still...
The Rolleinar gets much better at f/4, though.

A 100% crop taken from these shots:

Rolleinar @ f/2.8

Summicron @ f/2.8

...it seems to me like Rolleinar misfocus at comparing test, isn't it?
Both wonderfull glasses in my opinion.

Rolleinar is backfocused in the comparison with the Elmarit.
Congratulations, the rendering of those foreground leaves is excellent.

congrats ... please post more pics.

BTW ... i was shocked when i saw the 1994 price ... DM600!
How much did you pay for this lens?

congrats!
the Leica look better and the Rolleinar have purple fringing

But it shows where the focus is off. I would like to see the statue head shot precisely focused, I bet that the purple fringing will decrease.

Yes, you're right. I need to do another comparison.

OK, some new shots (same subject).
Tripod, EOS 5D.

Rolleinar HFT 2.8/28 @ f/2.8

Vivitar 2.5/28 @ f/2.8

And the Leica Summicron-R 2.0/35 @ f/2.8

100% crops:

It's pretty obvious that the Rolleinar is better than the Vivitar which is not a bad lens at all. But the Leica has the lead, definitely.
Well, I am comparing a 35mm lens stopped down with a 28mm lens wide open. But I have shot with hinnerker's Elmarit 2.8/28 and this is, I guess, a better lens than the Rolleinar.
Anyway, this Rolleinar 28 is more than just "good" and it will set you back a lot less than an Elmarit.

Now, I just need to think about what to do with it.

Either I adjust it to infinity, so that I can use it on the 40D but not on eht 5D any moer. Or I sand down the rear part, so that I can use it on the 5D as well. But then it will no longer be in mint condition.
Collector's value or User's value?

Very right. Wink

It is indeed. A fantastic lens!
It only has one flaw, the corners show wide open a distinct field curvature which is gone at f/4, though.

i went back and studied the rollienar/summicron pics. that rollie is very, very sharp. i think if you use some kind of grid that brings the summi back from your subject so the frame space is filled exactly the same, the rolleinar will stand up very well ...

Ok, guys. I have sanded down the rear part of the lens body so that it can be used on the 5D without a mirror clash.

I cannot focus to infinity yet, but at f/11 DoF is so deep that everything is sharp. Wink

I guess I have to sand down the adapter so that the DoF-method works at f/5.6. That would be fair enough.

Wide open I only would shoot a 28mm lens when I need it indoors at bad light. Then I don't need infinity.
And for landscapes I would stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 anyway.

The problem is that with a sanded adapter the lens moves back into the camera's mirror box. Hmmmpffff....

If all the pics were taken in the same day, I think that the vivitar had that lower rendering because the light was soft. Look at the face and see soft and large shadows like that pic should be the last of the three. While in the rolleinar and 'cron pics the sun was more strong (more acutance) with the obvious more sharpness and punch.

The rolleinars lenses are good, indeed. But they never had surpriced to me. I had several, and only the 2,8/135 was a very, very good one to me.

In the taunusreiter scheme of the HFT rolleina 28 mm lens, where is the 8th element? I see only seven, like the other mamiya's 28 (sold for voigtlander too).

Rino.

It's seven groups. The central element is a cemented double-element, AFAIK.

Yes, the light was a little different, but the Vivtar, despite being a really good lens, does not really match the Roleinar's performance. (It's close enough, though.)

Disagreee with you.
I did own a Rolleinar 2.8/105mm and this lens was fantastic. I did a great comparison test against the Leica Elmarit 2.8/90mm (2cam, Leicaflex Version) and this lens was going to outperform the Leica. Sharp, nice Bokeh, saturated colors and a great handling.

The Rolleinars are build as the low cost versions for the Rolleiflex 35 and some others as far as i know manufactured by Mamiya.

Most of them are average, but the 28mm, the 105mm and the 135mm are superb. Especially the 105mm surprised me a lot.

@Carsten

Would be nice, if i can test the Rolleinar 2.8/28mm in a future meeting.
If this Lens play in a league like the 105mm, this would be a great lens.
Let us test the lens against the Elmarit 2.8/28mm if we meet again...

Cheers
Henry

That would be great, Henry.
I will definitely keep it for a while, I really like the way it looks. Wink
A test against the Elmarit will be a real challenge for the Rolleinar.

Yes, I agree. The 105 is a good one. I didn't put it, but my intention was to refer only to mamiya made lens.

I have no doubt the Rolleinar is a wonderful lens.
I'm not 100% sure about the comparative test however. Lighting situations are not the exactly same in the comparative images, and I'm not so sure about the accuracy of focus. Maybe it's a good idea to do the comparative test in a more controlled environment (inside (controllable light), tripod, self-timer).

Seems to be a nice lens, Carsten!.
But your shots with the Leica make chatter my teeth... Wink

Enjoy it!

Regards.
