I was thinking that of all the choices, a 50 or perhaps 35 would garner the most votes. It's good to see an 85 in the mix, I'm expecting a 135 to rear its elegant head though early days yet. Zooms? Bit of a cop out I feel, while strictly speaking they are a single unit it could be said that they are multiple units in one shell, hmmmmmm. it has to be one lens and one lens only. The choice is yours be what it will. Have a think, what could you do if you didn't even have a choice? If your solo lens was dictated to you, say a 150 or a 15, you'd have to adapt. It may well spellthe end of your hobby or it may open a door, the only door available.

Regardless of what I may have read about a lens, if I haven't used it I couldn't say I would want it to be my keeper. So, limited to the lenses I have used, if forced to pick a single lens it would be the CZJ Flektogon 35mm f2.8.

I can only consider lenses I have used, on that basis I'd have the Vivitar Series 1 135/2.3 because it's just wonderful.

And there goes that 135mm Smile
Yes, only lenses you have used, wish lists are something else.

I'm switching from the OM 50/2 Macro to OM 35-80/2.8

This is a lens that rivals the Zeiss 35-70/3.4 plus it works great as a portrait lens at 80mm with wonderful bokeh wide open. Should also work nicely as a macro with a set of extension tubes.

This is a game. You can choose any lens out there. You don't have to own it.

Ah! OK! In that case it would be the new Nikon AF-S 24-120mm 1:4G ED VR, because it's a tad faster than the old one at the tele end and f/4 at 120mm is already pretty nice. Plus, it has got a stabilizer. Probably the most "universal" lens for a "fullframe" cam.

No doubt about it: Meyer-Optik Görlitz Domiplan 2.8/50mm rules them all.

I choose the 90mm f/3.5 EBC Fujinon from Fujica GW690.
On medium format it is a nice wide to normal lens, on 35mm a portrait/shy tele -lens, and on cropped sensors a tele.

That was a nice twist. One lens, 3 cameras Smile

today my answer is the Minolta MD Rokkor-X 45/2
Who knows which will be tomorrow?

Impossible to pick only one.

However, if I really, really had to, it would be the Sonnar 1.5/50 for my NEX-3 and the Pancolar MC 1.8/50 on my a850.

Only one lens.... That's a tough one for someone with LBA....
Well I'll try to narrow it down some, my top 3:
Rokkor MC PG 58/1.2 (fast, love the rendering, and suitable for landscapes)
Canon FD SSC 35/2.8 Tilt/Shift (beautiful rendering, resolution of a macro, and movements other lenses only dream of)
Leica R 60 (sharp wide open from 2:1 to infinity, it can do Macros, Portraits, and landscapes)

Now to pick one...
This is tougher then I expected.
The Rokkor I think.

An interesting thought experiment. When asked for a favorite lens, invariably I also think of a favorite camera that I would use it with. And if I were limited to just a single lens, I would want one that has proven itself to me to be a winner in a variety of settings. And what I keep coming up with is not just a lens. It is a camera. Simply because the lens in this camera is not interchangeable.

So, it would be a Zeiss Super Ikonta B with the coated 80mm f/2.8 Opton Tessar in a Synchro Compur shutter. My favorite Pocket Hasselblad.

I prefer the square format of the "B" because I don't have to worry about recomposing for verticals and I don't have to think about cropping unless I really want to -- I like square photos.

On Pentax DSLR - Pentax (K) 24/2.8 or more likely the AF Pentax kit 18-55
Yeah, theres a reason its the kit lens, and to tell the truth for 95% of anything I would want to use it for its perfectly fine. It would be more about taking pictures than gear.

I would have to say my Canon 20-35L f3.5 fd, wide enough for landscape at 20mm and street photography at 35mm end ff, and if I put it on a crop sensor I can get away with portraits.

I would go with my Vario-Sonnar 35-70/3.4. I get surprised everytime by what this thing can do.
