I've been using an E-P1 for about 6 months now and use it with old manual lenses exclusively. I like the fact that it has focus assist in the form of a magnified area. For some reason, don't know if it's a menu option that I hit in error, when I select the manual focus assist the enlarged area is automatically adjusting the exposure even though I am in full manual mode.
So just to be clear, when I use focus assist an a bright area, the exposure changes (darker), and when I use focus assist on a dark area the exposure changes (goes brighter). Needless to say that this is frustrating especially shooting outside in a bright sunlight or more recently snow.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Does this change the metering of the picture taken or it is just darkens/lightens the magnified lifeview?

I guess you have switched to spot metering. Just change it back in Menu>Settings>E*>Metering>ESP(first option)
If you want to see the exposure properly in life view then switch Menu>Settings>D*>Life view boost >off

thanks Stephan.
The image only darkens in live view, the resulting picture is correctly exposed.

The metering is already set to esp and the live boost was off.

In magnified mode, the magnified image changes exposure the same way as live boost works for an unmagnified image, any other thoughts?

Hm if this darkening only affects life view then the only setting which comes to mind is the live view boost.
You can turn it on and it will brighten the picture in the life view but the image you see on the LCD will not be the same as the actual exposure. Personally i do not like it - i prefer to see the effect of the exposure compensation in life view.

There are also settings for brightness and color temperature of lcd but it is not the same thing i guess.
Another thing you can try is to reset to factory defaults.
