I saw so many third brand medium range used zoom lens on the market. They are great in prices.... 70-210mm, 80-200mm, etc.
However, I hardly see an old extremely wide angle zoom lens, somewhere in the order of 10-30mm zoom. My questions are
(1) Are these type of lenses difficult to make and therefore they were a little bit rare in the 1970s and 1980s?
(2) What cheap brand name that made good/reasonable quality wide angle lens? (I am not talking about the expensive, established brand names.
(3) What typical model and zoom range to pick (please be specific, as I do not have a clue for old wide angle zoom lenses)? (perhaps living in a small city means that you do not have too much choices for people who is selling their used lenses).
Thanks for the info and discussion
PS I am using Nikon mount lenses.

Some Tamron Adaptall-2 zoom to 28mm. I have a Sun 3.5/24-40, widest I've ever seen from that era.

I have the Tamron SP 24-48, and it's great. I hear there is a Vivitar 24-48 too, which is also recommended.

There weren't many wider zooms at the time as everyone was using 35mm full frame, where 24mm is extremely wide already Very Happy There was a third party zoom that started at 17mm but I hear it's pretty rubbish, which is to be expected as technology has moved on.

Variozenitar 25-45 2.8/3.5 Russian from KMZ but alas in K mount only. Very good but not so easy to find usually about £100 or more if you can get one

I agree. I also had this lens. It's a pretty good one.

Two other really good lenses, but rather rare are:

Tokina AT-X 2.8/24-40 (I loved this lens!) and Hoya HMC 3.5/25-42:

I really can recommend the Tokina with the constant f/2.8.
Sometimes I regret that I have sold it.
And the Hoya also surprised me. Really good for a wide angle zoom.

Yes they are VERY difficult to make

The first 24mm zoom were Sun 24/40 and Vivitar S1 24/48 (kiron made)
The first 21mm zoom was the Sigma Two-Touch, later Sigma manufactured a One-touch version (i sell my om one !)

Sigma also manufactured a mf 18-35mm (same as the af version - I keep mine !)

I'm very impressed by my Tamron SP 35-80mm zoom. Perhaps not wide enough for you.

Relayer/LucisPictor:

I will keep in mind for the lenses that you suggested:
Sigma 21-35mm f/3.5-4
Tokina 24-40mm f/2.8
Hoya 24-42mm f/3.5

I wonder what are the going price for such a used lens?

The Tokina and Hoya's photos look a relatively modern lens. What year were they manufactured? Were they designed when there was no digital camera (ie. for FF film)?
Thanks for the info.

I don't know the exact year of production, but since this Tokina also existed as an AF lens (as well as the Sigma 21-35, BTW), I guess it's a pretty modern lens, late 80s perhaps.

The Tokina will probably be about €60-80,- and the Hoya perhaps a little less.
