Hi,
I have these three fine Taylor Hobson lenses which I would like to try and mount on a DSLR.

• ORTAL 2” f2 T2.3
• ORTAL 5” f2.8 T3.1
• ORTAL 3” f2 T2.3

All three are fitted with the original TV flange.
I want to be able to find the correct adapter for either Nikon Or Canon.

I wonder what is the mounting thread size (without the TV flange).
Is it M42 or other?

Any help or clue will be much appreciated.
Thanks
David

Welcome to the forums! Cool

By "TV flange", do you mean C-mount?

Can you guide me on how to post some pictures?

Sure. When you are typing your reply, look at the buttons above the text portion. There is a button labeled "Upload picture", and when you press that, it gives you a method to upload pictures directly to the forum. Once the picture is uploaded, there is another link that will paste the image into your post.

Show the rear part and when taking pictures put a ruler in the pictures to be aqble to estimate the size.

Ortals are older lenses for Vidicon and Plumbicon Tubes and have rather low resolution (TV resolution is just about 210 - 300.000 pixels) so don't expect wonders. Also teh image circle was rather small for these tubes 20-25mm.

Hi,
Thanks for your help
I uploaded a few pictures.
The connecting flange tube diameter is 60mm.

A job for a very good machinist with some photographic understanding and a lathe I would say!

Where does the focus fall? Have you taken pics by holding the lens to the lensless camera?

The ugly lugs on the outside look the best option but how to connect them to the camera?

They are certainly nice looking lenses! Worth using if just for that fact alone! Cool

To cover a FF 35mm sensor the image circle will have to be very large? I am not sure that these lenses will accomplish that. Many TV lenses leave significant vignetting on the 4/3 sensor which is one quarter the size in area.

You can point the lens out the window and see what image forms on a piece of white card where you have marked inches or metric to enable a sizing of the image?

Hi David , I have the similar RTH Ortal 3" / 5" and are now under M42 mounting modification in Guangzhou China .

Once the mounting are complete modification , will inform the "lense specialist" to post the pics for sharing .

As for Optar 2" , will double-check if it may cover FF ( currently I have another Cooke Speed Panchro 2in awaiting for M mounting modification - details TBC ) .

So far I have a list of lenses etc Schneider Xenon 100f2,0 +125f2,0 / Astro Berlin 75f1,8 / 75f2,3 / 125f2,3 + Astro Berlin 50f1,8 , Cooke SP 75f2,0 , Angenieux 75f1,8 S3 , Leitz Elcan 6"f2,8 ( M42 ) + 3"f2,8 + 1,25"f2,8 ( the other 2 may only for M mounting - details TBC ) , CZ Tevidon 100f2,8 , Kern Switar 50f1,8 , ERA 85f1,5 TV lens ( very alike to Helios 85f1,5 ) , Enna Ennalyt 85f1,5 , CZ Biotar 80f2,0 , Angenieux 35f0,95 , etc awaiting modification by the same "lense specialist" in GZ China .

This "lense specialist" not merely with vast knowledge in optical aspects but with presentable skills in photography - his equipment ranging from M43 / APS-C / FF / Leica M and others .

I may suggest him to set-up a workshop in GZ if the market demand is positive . This workshop will be specialised in lense mounting modification + general maintainance etc ( including the fabrication of special purpose focusing helicoid M42 / M43 / M + the latest Sony NEX 3 / 5 varies adapters ) .

Our aim is to REBUILT - RECONTSRUCT - RECOVER all the excellent lenses from the past by means of meticulous craftsmanship , but with reasonable service charge not to burst your pocket .

Will keep all update once my lenses are completes modification - tentatively few will be by Sept 2010 .
