Say what you want but I think that the old Nikkors (those with the Nippon Kogaku name on them) have a character that makes them unique and that the newer Nikkors (for sure better lenses under all respects) have lost.
This is a picture I took for fun now out of my balcony because I liked the fruits of the Japanese Medlar we have in the courtyard:
At this size you might say "so what" but please look at the full size image here from my server (make sure that you are looking at 100% size, your browser will probably resize image first):

I think that the natural optical wide open defects of the lens here are aesthetically better than any soft focus lens or filter or whatever. It really gives the feeling of the sunlight and warm temperature. It has an organic quality and a colour density that I think newer Nikkors have lost
The lens I used is a Nikkor-Q 3.5/135, used wide open. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Nice sample.
It's a very different lens to the the 2.8. I prefer the 2.8 for most shots, but it has less character than the 3.5. _________________ Richard

thank you for the sample ORIO,
me not being a specialist about lenses, let me comment on the fruits:
my japanese friend eats some every day, she says they are a traditional medicine against cancer.
She also uses the deep green ( not young ) leaves directly on her body ( can explain how is anybody is interested )
cheers,

Seasoned or fresh?
The European Medlar fruits can only be eaten seasoned.

she heats up a block of 'konyakku', wraps in inside a towel and uses this pack to press the leave on her neck, leaves it there for 15 minutes or so.
( she has some places in her throat which get checked regularily for cancer )
Konyakku..hm.. this may not be found easily outside of Japan, but it is not necessary. Though it's also healthfood ( scroll down: http://nutritionhouse.co.th/herb3.htm ) I believe it simply is used as a substance to keep the heat. So it's simply making a heat pack and pressing the leave with it on the indicated body part.
cheers,

All lenses have character, good, bad or neutral. Even different copies of the same lens can provide different character/results. It is fun testing and shooting to see what each lens has to offer. The trick is remembering them all!
You can have a good idea of what to expect with certain groups of lenses, but even then you may get a surprise or two! _________________ Michael Hill |

Hi Peter -
Very nice picture !
Wonderful tones, I can't get my B+W looking like that. Is it the lens ? _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

I thnk it is the lens that produces these tones. The old preAI Nikkors are very nice indeed. This one - the 50mm f2 is well known for the quality of the images it produces. I have a few and the 35mm f2 is another that is widely regarded as capable of prducing top notch images. However, I have to say I particularly like the gradation of tones in the above shot. _________________ PeterM |
