Hello,

I opened this thread to post in it some data about, let's say "no name" lens (lens which were not produced by the company of whose name they are wearing it- ex. Vivitar, Hanimex, etc.) or lens less known and more important lens that are real gems or at least pretty good lens in the same time.
This way, may be we could find out some good glass at a very price.

1. I'll start by adding to this list Orio's Polar Automatic 2.8/35mm lens (hope you don't mind Smile ) on M42 screw mount.

Agree, great idea Cosmin.
I'll make some Polar samples

(LOL... it sounds like I'd go photographing to the North Pole!) Laughing

Excellent idea - although Hanimex procured lenses cheaply and sold them to budget buyers there were probably one or two that stood out from the crowd and it'd be interesting to find out what they were.

Hey, that's a challenge for me! I'm the prince of no-name lenses, or at least I used to be. Wink Laughing

Some I have sold again, but I still have several...

Hanimex Automatic 3.5/23 (OK, it's an affordable wide angle.)
Petri 2.8/28 MC Macro (Not bad, really.)
Porst WW 1.8/35 MC Auto H (Well, it is fast...)
Auto Revuenon 1.4/55 (But this one is quite well known, since it was produced by Tomioka)
Auto Reflecta 1.7/55 & Petri Auto C.C. 1.7/50 (I've sold those two and I do not know if I still have some examples.)
Hanimex Tele-Lens 4/100 (This is a pretty good one, actually.)
Opticam 2.8/135 (One of the first MF lenses I bought. I was quite amazed at that time, but it is no match for a Nikkor 135 or a Jupiter-37.)
Revuenon-Spezial 2.8/135 (Attila has got this one now.)
Weltblick 3.5/135 (One of my favourite 135mm lenses.)
Greens London 3.5/135 (broken aperture)
Super Varexon 3.5/200 (Sold!)
Spiratone Plura-Coat 3.8-5.6/28-200 H/D-MC Zoom (Don't know a lot about this lens, yet.)
Compact Auto Zoom S 1:4-5.6/70-210 MC (also branded by Maginon)
Hanimex C-Macro 4.5/80-200 (Only for Canon FD...)

I will check for examples and shoot some when I find the time...

I saw one for sale on the local market with 150 euros.

About the Hanimex 80-200 / f:4 tele zoom. In this two reviews http://www.pbase.com/steephill/image/38668204 and Tamron SP 3.5/70-210 http://www.pbase.com/steephill/image/38668209 the resolutin values, at least al 135 and 210mm seems to be very close to the Tamron's results. Now, I don't know how relevant these values are. Here I considered the Tamron SP as a quality lens, but one might tep into a bad sample.

From the tests here : http://www.pbase.com/steephill/standards
these could be good lenses :

Chinon 1.7/50mm
Ricoh 1.4/50mm

except the 1.2 and the 1.7 from Pentax

and from http://www.pbase.com/steephill/28mms
the Vivitar FM 2.8/28 seems better from the "no name" lens

I compared them after the data showd in the article.

Well, I left my Vivitar-, Soligor and Rikenon lenses out of my list. These names are so well known that I do not consider them to be "no-name" lenses.

I've got 2 "strange" lenses, not really "no name" but I don't know where were they produced from.

Auto Sunagor Compact 2.8/28 mm. I just know that it was made in Japan.

Another lens is a well-known name, it is Helios, but this Helios was made in Japan. No one knows much about its manufacturer

Helios Auto Wide Angle 2.8/35 mm.

A friend of mine have got this lens.

It is not strange, isn't it? It is a normal Vivitar 2.8/28 mm. M42 mount??

No, it isn't. It is Helios 2.8/28 mm. "Made in Japan".

These lenses look like the typical 80s wide angle lenses. Some of them were really good. You can get a decent performance for very little money.

I also have a "Made in Japan" HELIOS lens (135mm f/2.Cool.

And today I got a Auto Reflecta 1.7/55 for nothing - but I guess it's not the LucisPictor one's Laughing

I've got two no name lenses - Hanimex C-Macro 80-200 in M42 and a Super Paragon 8/500 T-mount.

Haven't got any sample images as they date from my film days but I remember being distinctly underwhelmed at the time. That said, I should really revisit them with the 5D.

Good price! Wink

Please tell us how you like it. I was not really satisfied by its performance...

I'm ashamed I bought a Marexar-CX zoom 28-80/f3.8-4.8 (PK mount) new in 1982 to use on my ME Super. I used it for just two films. The optics are rubbish and the camera has to be set to +1 EV to get correct exposure. I wouldn't give it away, let alone sell it!

Here's a question in the no-name front . . .

In Canada one of the chain photo shops is Black's (and it was also Astral I believe), any how I have a lens and a tele-converter that would be considered "store brand" - I was womdering if anybody has heard anything (sorry I don't have pictures Crying or Very sad ).

The lens is an Auto Image 1:2.8 135mm telephoto lens ( it is marked made in Japan). (Bought used 6 or 7 years ago)
The teleconverter is marked as follows: IMAGE MC AUTO TELE CONVERTER 2X FOR MD JAPAN (Bought over 20 years ago new from Astral Photo - has served me very well.)

Any help is appreciated!
