Hi,
I am selling a pre-Ai lens (Nikkor 85mm f1.Cool and they are asking me whether the this camera https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/fa.htm is compatible with the lens.

I am not an expert, so I am asking for help in this forum.

Thanks in advance.

The following extract from this Wikipedia web page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_FA suggests it cannot. But others with more experience than I of this specific camera will have a view. Lets see what they say.

"The FA accepted all lenses with the Nikon F bayonet mount (introduced in 1959) supporting the Automatic Indexing-Shutter (AI-S) feature (introduced in 1981). The contemporary Nippon Kogaku AI-S lenses were the Nikkor AI-S, and Nikon Series E types. The AF-S Nikkor, AF-I Nikkor, AF Nikkor D and AF Nikkor autofocus lenses are also AI-S types, which will work too but for manual focus only.

The FA could also use the older Nikkor AI (introduced in 1977) and AI'd Nikkor lenses, but in that case, the AMP meter and the shutter priority and High Speed program autoexposure modes would not work as well as AI-S lenses allowed (this is due to their non-linear aperture stop-down mechanisms)."

You can see that it does not address non AI lenses specifically but its context suggests that the answer to your question is that it does not.

It's not. The Ai tab on FA is not folding, and even if it were you'd lose metering.

It seems KR has more information:

https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm

Read with his article on the FA about pre 1977 Which is the pre AI time, I beleive these are best with an AF confirm adapter on a canon SLR, or any mirorless

I have both the Nikon FA and a Nikkor (K series) 1.8/85mm. My Nikkor was modified by Nikon for Ai, and therefore it works with the Nikon FA. However - as mentioned above - the S mode and the P mode will not have the same accuracy as with AiS lenses.

Is your Nikkor 1.8/85mm Ai-modified as well?
