No wonder, it's a CMOS sensor.
CMOS are significantly better than CCD with regards to noise.
It seems that Nikon has finally convinced themselves that CMOS is superior.

This camera looks basically like a Nikon modernized version of Canon 5D: same basic features, that is 12.1 Megapixels (5D has 12.8 ), CMOS sensor, and full frame, plus a few of today's tech features, such as 14 bit processing, higher ISO limit, and a higher fps speed. I don't see mention of a dust removal system though, which is a feature that I now expect in today's cameras.

If I didn't have the 5D already, and if there wasn't that register distance handicap (causing the impossibility to use practically all of my current lenses, from M42 to Contax to Leica), this is a camera that I would really consider. Like you said, that 6400 ISO shot is impressively clean, and I love the CMOS sensor colours.

OUCH! I see now... 5180 Euros body only???

No way, the 5D costed me 1900 Euros brand new and packed, and it's basically the same camera specs and technology, the 6400 ISO and the faster fps are not enough reasons for me to justify spending 3280 Euros more. With the same money I can buy TWO 5Ds plus a further 1.380 Euros equivalent of lenses!

Hello,

Yes, is a pro-camera, placed between Canon's pro-cameras 1Ds and 1D as price (in fact is pretty close to 1D3's price, which had APS-H sensor and less Mpx). I didn't compare it with the 1Ds3 but except the Mpx number I did not see anything too, different.
COMPARISON (clikk)

PS. I-am curious how the 25900 ISO images will look like.

Well, since it has a full frame I find it more logical to compare it with the full frame 5D which has a little more Mpx, and same size CMOS sensor. Limitations: 3200 ISO limit instead of 6400, and a slower fps rate, which is meaningful only if you are a much dedicated sport photographer, for any other use the 5D's fps is more than enough.
All this for a price that is about 36% of the price of the D3.
I would understand the purchase of the D3 only if one is a serious sports photographer, for any other kind of photography, it would make more sense, with the same money, to buy two 5D bodies and a superquality lens or two.

I think if I was spending that much on a digital camera (which will never happen!), why not go just a little bit further and get one of these. Smile

FUll frame camera with a CMOS sensor, I was expecting only such excellent results.
Unfortunately, the price tag is on the prohibitive side - at least for a guy like me. Professional photographers and studios will much enjoy this release.

Hello,

Some new D3 shots (Jpeg&RAW ISO 25600 incuded ! http://www.nikonwatch.com/images/20070924_8285_D325600.JPG Smile - noisy, but is 25600!)
http://nikonwatch.com/?p=210

And D300 http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=nikon%20D300%20sample&w=all&s=int

Yes, they are expensive but I think this is the quality which the cheeper camera's pictures will have after some years (3-4 ?!).

The D3 is designed for sports and photojournalists - the market that Nikon has lost over the past decade. They are keeping the D2x at this point for studio work. Same with D200, they are keeping it in parallel with the D300. Not sure I completely understand the marketing logic. And the marketing will not work without some serious upgrading of their modern AF lenses to incorporate anti-shake at least.

I am very much in two minds over the upgrade at this point - I will look very closely at the Canon 40D in comparison with the D300. In the States there is a $300 price differential in favour of Canon. My D200 provides me with as much quality as I can use at my skill level and many of my lenses are way beyond that. At this point there is simply not enough information available to make an informed decision and the early buyers are taking something of a gamble IMHO - although Nikon usually delivers on the upgrades (unlike Canon's D20 to D30 move).

Patrick I suspect the price difference will soon narrow - it seems standard Nikon policy to release a little high then reduce. From what I've seen of the Canon 40D it seems to sit pretty much in the middle of the D200 and D300 in spec. If Nikon are keeping the D200 (and that seems unclear) they need to drop it's price a little. I've not really looked at Canon since the AE-1 - I don't like the handling of the EOS's, but they generally seem to deliver the goods.

I think pretty much all the tele's over 135mm are now VR (the 180mm is the one exception I can think of).

I wish them luck with the D3, I know they've got some pro's switching back on the basis of the pre-release models but they've got a hard battle ahead to regain the market they've lost.
