Just received this lens today from USA.
It's a very nice lens. This one has the sonnar design 5/3.

My Nikkor collection grows : Nikkor S.C 50mm 1.4 ; Nikkor S.C 55mm 1.2 ; Nikkor Q 135mm 3.5 and now the P 105mm 2.5.
I got the hood with both 50mm 1.4 and 135mm 3.5. I'm happy because the 135mm hood fits also the 105mm f2.5.

First quick shot with it and the 5D MkII.
No flash, Iso 800, wide open, 1/50", handheld.

#1

We can read the text on the pocket hard drive.

Thank you hifisapi. Yes it is and has good micro detail. I think it's a good couple with the 5D MkII. Smile
This is the Sonnar design version 5 elements in 3 groups. It weights 370 grs and has 1,20m minimum focus distance.
The further version of the 105 2.5 has 5 elements in 4 groups and is said to be sharper than this one. Its weight is 435 grs and the minimum focus distance is 1m.

Thank you John for this resource.

I learn what's the meaning of the letter after the "Nikkor"

U (Uns) for 1 element
B (Bini) for 2 elements
T (Tres) for 3 elements
Q (Quatour) for 4 elements
P (Pente) for 5 elements
H (Hex) for 6 elements
S (Septem) for 7 elements
0 (Octo) for 8 elements
N (Novem) for 9 elements
D (Decem) for 10 elements

I had the 135/3.5 with the same barrel design. I loved that lens. It was sharp and so unbelievably nice to handle. Mine had the original Nikon AI conversion ring which fully matches the design of the original aperture ring. Thomas

This entire set was shot with the original Nikon 105 f.2/5 first edition of this lens. Straight scans from Portra 400 film. No post processing.

Several years ago I bought copies of every version of this lens I could find (original Nikkor P in F-mount; original PC in F-mount; AI; AIS) and tested them for portrait and macro use. The one I liked best for portrait was the PC, while for macro the AI was sharper. I ended up selling all of them along the way, but always longed for the PC back. Unfortunately the Non-AI mount would not work with my cameras, so there was no choice. A few weeks ago I lucked upon a rare beast...original model PC but with factory AI conversion. It is now waiting for me to have time to check it out for portrait use.

Ray, we're waiting for your future posts with this lens. Wink

About PC Nikkor, I thought PC meant Perspective Control, so shift or tilt & shift lenses.
I don't know a PC Nikkor 105.
Would you have a picture of it to upload ?

The original 105/2.5 was marked NIKKOR P and had uncoated elements. The later pre-AI version(s) had coated optics and were marked NIKKOR P.C. I think there was even an early AI version marked P.C. but most later AI and all AIS eliminated the lens numbering code altogether.
