HI all,

Here is my latest acquisition - was offered a super deal on a collectible lens by a wonderful friend who also repairs and reconditions my lenses. It's a classic rf lens from the 50's that is soft wide open, glows wide open, distorts wide open, has wacky, swirly bokeh, but settles down to normal by f/8. It's also awesome and full of character! It's the Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1. Here are some pics:

Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1 on Sony A7Mii

f/1.1 of brick wall - soft, glowy, distortion, some CA, no post processing

f/1.1 of street sign, showing bokeh behind - cleaned up nicely in post

all at f/1.1 portrait examples, also post processed

all at f/1.1 some flower examples, post processed for cropping, contrast, and exposure, some minor sharpening

This one at f/8, landscape

Thanks, Klaus. It is much more of an "all purpose" optic than I had originally thought.

Agreed - I am very surprised.
Excellent results all through the aperture range.
Congratulations

Pdccameras, fantastic lens rendering and a great procession, congratulations!

How a lens could be that sharp and not at all glowy at f1.1? I wonder if they used a special glass in production, too expensive to put it in other fast lenses.

Thanks, All and Alex!

Alex, actually, I mentioned at the top of the post it is quite glowy and soft around the edges wide open right out of the camera. There is vignetting, CA, and some pretty wacky bokeh as well. However, it was well within the ability of Photoshop to negate the majority of those effects with some modest use clarity, dehaze, and a contrast boost in ACR. All this and the character of the lens stills shines through!

There is a great history of the lens here:

https://imaging.nikon.com/history/story/0007/index.htm

..and you are correct, there are supposedly three elements in the lens made of the new (new for the early 1950s) lanthanum glass.

All the best,

Paul
