Nikon Nikkor 85/1.8

I picked this up with a lot I purchased from the Adolph Gasser going out of business sale earlier this year.

This is the later 1970's version of the earlier Nikkor-H.C 85/1.8
Mine seems to be one of the earlier ones, probably from 1975-76 going by the serial number.
It has been well used, and no doubt to good purpose, at it is a very fine lens.
Its not at all a rare lens, and a good number of other people have written up their opinions of it. In fact its not the first one I've had, I had another and sold it some years ago.

I am documenting it because I did use it quite a bit recently. I will be selling this at some point, as I have a superbly beat-up Nikkor-H to serve in its place in my beat-up Nikon collection.

What can I say? This is a classic portrait lens, sharp wide open and even more so stopped down, nice bokeh, capable of surprisingly close focus for what it is (about 3 feet), quite resistant to flare, and etc. It is not too expensive on ebay if you look a bit, perhaps (with the Nikkor-H) the best bargain in vintage portrait lenses today.

All shot on my Pentax K30 on which it mounts perfectly well, as do most older Nikkors. Everything (that I recall) shot wide open using a polarizer as an ersatz ND filter. That itself flared somewhat. Shot in various places in San Francisco, many in the Musee Mechanique.

Yes, this is the sort of lens that made Nikon's reputation. From a Pentax user for the last 36 years , that ought to ring true.

Great images! I have the same lens, though it hasn't been Ai-ed. It was the second Nikkor I ever bought, back in the late 1970s. I got some sand in it back in the mid-90s and set it aside -- never cleaned it out until this year, when I finally disassembled it and cleaned it up. A few nicks in the front element, but does great on my D3200 and D5200.

Wow! Nice photo essay! I have a nice 105/2.5, so I've always told myself I don't really need an 85, but actually I have a couple in Canon FD mount. And I gotta admit, there's just something about the 85's focal length that's -- just right! And yours is particularly sweet.
