Not in 1979 Bob - Velvia first appeared around 1990.

More likely Kodachrome.

I would also vote for Kodachrome if it was a slide - but a computer scan is manipulatable in so many ways that it becomes really an hazzard to tell what film it is (without knowing what PP was done on the image).

Yes it is in all likelihood Kodachrome. Kodachrome was the standard film used for NG photographic submissions at that time. (as well as many other magazines due to its long life for archival purposes.)
