Various model numbers (D30?) have been suggested for something that sits between a D300 and a D3. There have also been various rumours as to whether 'between' meant it was fullframe or not.

Nikons own 1.10 D3 firmware update leaked that there would be a D3 with 24.4 MPx in the near future (but not what the model would be called).

And a replacement for the ageing D80 (likely to take it to the same 12MPx sensor as used in the D300, hopefully with liveview, but some missing features to ensure the D300 still sells - I guess lower burst speed, no 14bit option, and lower build quality/no weathersealing) - perhaps called the D90. If so, the one between the D3 and D300 is less likely to be called the D30. D700 makes more sense.

Given that Nikon has stated that profit margin is more important to them than absolute sales volume, I think the D80-replacement is least likely and the other two are more likely. Nikon seem to be focusing on the high end, while the consumer bracket is left with light warmups of existing designs (D40x -> D60), uninspiring variable aperture zooms (16-85) or the lens offerings of third parties (Sigma, Tokina, Tamron).

There strategy seems to be working. The D3 has already started to get pro's make the move over, and in the UK atleast, Nikon are leading the entry level sales, with Sony second and Canon third. Of course the newly announced entry level Canon may shake that up a bit!

If I was Nikon I'd be concentating hard on something to spoil the 5DII's arrival...

The middle one is certainly either a fisheye or an "ultrasuperwide" (such as 10mm).

Second thought: probably not a fisheye as the hood would be in the way.

These are (supposedly) full frame AF-S 30mm f/1.2 and AF-S 24mm f/2 plus some DX 10-24 zoom. They could equally well be fakes of course.

Can someone in Germany confirm the report that the July issue of ProfiPhoto magazine has an article on the Nikon D700?

Quote:
D700: D3-Sensor, AF-Module but no phone/speaker, only 95% viewer, 200-6400ISO, 5FPS (8 with MB-D10), pop-up-flash (power 11), dust-removal on sensor, EN-EL3e, 1076g, fsync 1/250, 1/8000-30s, one CF-Slot, grid in viewer optional, virtual horizon, little less fast to D3. Compatible to WT-4.

SB900: 17-200mm (14mm) on FX. Reacts on DX/FX-effective focal length. Three illumination modes: standard, even, midconcentrated. Firmwareupdate via camera-CF. Overheat-deactivation. Reads and communicates gels to camera for WB. Handling by central turning wheel.

prices: D700 @ 2.599EUR, SB900 @ 500EUR
http://nikonrumors.com/2008/06/29/news-from-germany-nikon-d700-and-sb900-in-profifoto-magazine.aspx

The ProfiPhoto website still has the June cover, not the July one. Apparently this article says the July issue is delayed because of breaking news, but my German is too poor to tell if that is what it says Embarassed
