The Summitar was produced from 1939 to 1955 originally 10-blade and uncoated. As from 1946 they have been coated and in 1950 the aperture design was changed from 10 to 6 blades.
Here is a coated 10-blade version from 1949 in nice condition with original pictures for sale: https://goo.gl/466hfw
I've bought there already several used Leitz lenses and was always satisfied. Other than that I don't have any relationship to this store. _________________ Thomas Bernardy

The "*Summitar" (Note the Star in front of the name) is a prototype for the 5cm F2 Summicron. The *Summitar used Thorium glass, as did the early Summicrons. While the standard Summitar is relatively easy to find in all versions, hex aperture, round aperture, coated and uncoated- the version using Thorium glass is very rare.
Leica used the two-layer HEX shaped aperture in the Xenon, Summar, and later Summitar. My personal belief, never backed up in writing, is that this was done to mitigate the effects of focus shift caused by spherical aberration. |

It looks like a double diaphragm but it is in fact a single diaphragm with angled blades.
Cheers!

Thankyou- made me look at the Xenon and Summar again. I've never had the Hex aperture Summitar.
It's the image of the Summar aperture that I remembered, the Xenon is clearly single-layer. I should have known that since I took it apart to clean haze out. After doing that- was a much better performer than expected.
