Finally got to test my helios 44-2 out today, strange and a little touchy lens this fella is, it’s decent for close up wide open and a couple of stops down but after that it falls flat on it’s face, center is good but seems to fall off fast on the edges, but it’s pretty dirty on the inside too.

Made a few quick shots with it, all close ups hand held, the infinity shots I tossed except for 1 the rest were terrible which I’ll post later.

These are right out of the camera wide open or maybe f4 at most

this one I sharpened just a tad bit

Now for the bad news, when I got it the main aperture ring (has 2 rings) was hard to click from stop to stop so I figured well maybe that’s the way they made it or the grease hardened, so the more I messed with it all of a sudden it froze up then I put a little too much pressure on it and the focus ring popped loose on one side were the set screws are, so it’s going to get a bath sooner than I had expected, but the aperture ring turns better now lol.

Also now that the focus ring is somewhat free of the lens, the rear cluster seems to come further in toward the camera now, so maybe someone took it apart at one time and didn’t get the focus set right on it and just tightened the set screws without checking focus.

So now I need to know if anyone has done surgery to one these so I can get it apart and more importantly back together.

Wow.. what a lens... If you ask me, keep this lens as such.... and spend $20 to get new one...

Hi Joee

I have put a pdf about dismantling and cleaning the Helios 44-2 on my webspace. You can download it here:

http://www.euphonium.plus.com/Drawings/Helios%2520Repair%2520Manual%2520English.pdf

I'll leave it there for a few days, if you get it please let me know so I can delete it. Thanks, and best of luck!
