Lovely photos there Atilla, I rec'd my lens from Australia, the seller wrapped the parcel in xmas paper and it came straight through customs
I've just packed it up to send off to my friend who is going to carry out a non destructive mount conversion for me, after seeing your pics I can't wait to actually use it. |

Nice review, but I wouldn't call it the best portrait lens, I'd pick Canon's 85/1.2 long beforehand, and possibly Pentax 85/1.9 and 1.8's. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...

No-no.. ))) I had 85/1.2 aspherical. Minolta is a much more interesting artist. Maybe L version is not so dull as asph but I still didn't get experience with L |

For 85mm I have the Zeiss contax 85 1.4, Zeiss Contax 85 2.8, Minolta MC 2 85 1.7 and Jupiter 9 85 2.0, waiting on a Helios 40 to come in. The Minolta 85 1.7 is the 85mm lens that I use the most. It’s sharpness wide open equals the Zeiss 1.4, slightly behind the Zeiss 2.8 and way ahead of the jupiter 9.
Of course the Zeiss have much higher contrast, however I prefer the Minolta colors and sometimes the Zeiss contrast can become too much for portraits. Plus the Minolta bokeh is much smoother than both of the Zeiss lenses and slightly behind the Jupiter. The best competition I have found when it comes to the Minolta 85 1.7 bokeh is the Minolta MC 2 58 1.2, Tokina 90 2.5 macro, Tair 11a and Gottingen 135 2.8. Of course sample variation applies.
The Minolta is far ahead when it comes to focus feel and mechanical quality. Would be interested to compare to a takumar 85 at some point... A Minolta MC 2 with 15-20 aperture blades would be without equal... |
