I just made a very fast test for Peter. The same subject shot with an MC Jupiter-37 AM (3.5/135mm) and a pre-AI Nikkor Q Auto 2.8/135mm

Of course what I said before still applies, these old Nikkors are in more than one way indebted to the German teles, just like the Jupiters are.

Specs of test:

- shots taken hand held at 100 ISO at f/5.6, speed 1/250 sec. I have chosen values that allowed for decent definition at safe speed and 100 ISO in order to have the camera deliver the best color performance possible

- pictures converted to TIF 16bit at original size, not sharpened (not even in camera), followed jpg conversion 85%

- white balance in camera set to a fixed value ("cloudy") to avoid the camera processor to reinterpret and change the color value in AWB mode from shot to shot

- saturation set to the minimum value (-4) in order to allow the camera (and software) processor to interfere with original colors as less as possible

- conversion made with Breezebrowser software, whose conversion is based on Canon's SDK and it's perfectly equivalent (and gives identical results) to Canon's original software shipped with the camera.

Jupiter:

Nikkor:
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/4650/nikka9.jpg

As you can see, the differences are subtle. We are talking here of differences that can be worthy only to very analitical lens freaks (just like me). The normal (i.e. not lens insane) photographer will probably not appreciate any.

As far as my hyperanalitical examination goes, I find the following:

- Jupiter has obviously a better resolvance than the Nikkor lens. The contrast is the same, but the Jupiter resolves more detail

- the Jupiter is slighly, but clearly in my opinion, more saturated in the warm tones: red and yellow, where the Nikkor is greyer.
The cold tones such as blue are equally saturated.

- generally speaking, the color rendition of the Jupiter appears to me not only more saturated but also more balanced.

In conclusion, the Jupiter is a better lens - for me of course. The differences are so subtle that you may come up with a different verdict.

Nice test, Orio!

You know that I like the J37 a lot.
I compared it with my Nikkor QC 3.5/135 (and some other 135mm lenses: Pentacon, Raynox, CZJ)

And I think that there is no quality difference between the Nikkor and the J37. I might even think that the Nikkor is tiny little bit better.
But surely they are at least as good as my CZJ 4/135 and better than my other 135mm lenses, including the Pentacon 2.8/135.

If you see details , sharpness Pentacon 135mm never be the winner, but try to make portraits and other more art theme shoot with them. Perhaps you will surprised about Pentacan 135mm. Yeah, I am Pentacon 135mm fanatic Smile

That's the right attitude! Very Happy
I know this and feel this for some of my lenses, too.
They might not be the best one, but I like them a lot!

Precisely. Nikkor-Q Auto 2.8/135mm is not exactly a great lens; I say, it's a dog in Nikon family, others may argue. It's a single-coated lens, too.

On the other hand, the Q.C. and K versions of Nikkor 3.5/135 are exact replicas of Sonnar 3.5/135. No wonder they perform the same as said Sonnar or Jupiter-37A. In fact, I found the Nikkor 3.5/135 to have a slight edge over Jupiter-37 in color, contrast, and resolution, and a noticeable advantage in its handling of flare when shooting against the light.

Having said all that, Ai and AIS Nikkor 3.5/135 are sharper yet, with noticeably higher resolution and contrast wide open at the expense of bokeh (it's an Ernostar design with somewhat rough rendering).

I have jupiter 37 and I am very happy with it. But I guess most of these 135mm's are good. People talk about resolution and saturation. But if you are not considering big prints, you wont be able to exploit its resolution power and also if you shoots raw, you can control saturation during PP.

Not always. My Sonnar 85/2.8 gives such contrasty pictures in contra-light that no other lens can deliver, even with heavy post-processing. In good lighting conditions, most good lenses behave similarly. It is the challenging light when you see the difference between good and great ones.

From my experience: the J37 and Pentacon are about the same and the CZ 3.5/135 is sharper.
