What a great shot Shocked !!

Looks unreal - like a 3D-rendering from 3DSMAX.

Cheers

Thanks,

I'm sure that's the light HDR rendering.

Great photo; I'd also love to come across one of these in my life time.

In the meanwhile, I'd like to point out.... "mammalian" doesn't sound right Wink Here I was expecting to see various clouds shaped like giraffes, rhinos, lions....

Well mammalian denotes that the the animal is milk-producing (from mammary glands). While most animals don't have protruding glands, as in the case with humans, I think the breast is what we most think of when we hear mammary. Since the clouds look like "bumps" I guess someone found it comical to name them accordingly.

I'd prefer "mammatus clouds" over "breast clouds" any day of the week.

No no, I'm OK with mammatus; that's what I always thought these were called. I'm just saying, mammatus, means "in the form of mammaries" while mammalian means "like mammals" or "of mammals". I'm just being a stickler dick, in other words.

Personally, I'd prefer "boob clouds" over mammatus clouds any day of the week.

I knew they existed, but I never saw them either.
Actually I only saw them in photograph from the USA, I never saw them in any photograph from Europe. Maybe they require specific weather conditions that are not possible here.

here's a nice link, for Carsten:

Not photoshopped. These are for real, no cosmetic surgery!

And yes, Mammatus coluds is the proper terminology. I had heard them referred to as mammalian clouds previously.

Cheers

I think you are right Orio, There are several thousand miles of rather flat land that lie between my part of Texas and the Arctic circle (The great plains of North America). Perhaps these cluds occur in places like that, the Steppes of Russia, etc.
