Okay, I know I should probably just buy an adapter and get snapping but just a thought that someone here has probably already experimented with Mamiya 645 (so designed for 120 film) lenses on DSLR: is it just an experiment or are the results worthwhile?
I've got Mamiya lenses in other mount SLR systems inclduing M42 so I can give them a go whilst I'm at it.
I don't suppose that either would replace my boringly efficient AF/MF L lenses and I wouldn't know if they'd match my trifox converted FL/FD lenses either. _________________ I used to think digital was fun but then I discovered film, then I found old lenses and then, eventually I found rangefinders.

So that's what I'll do then. Coming from HK so it'll either get here next week or just in time for Christmas. _________________ I used to think digital was fun but then I discovered film, then I found old lenses and then, eventually I found rangefinders.

Sadly, they vary somewhat in optical quality...The M645 45mm f2.8 N is quite soft and unable to match the sharpness of an ultra cheap 35mm format lens like the Pentacon 50mm f1.8. I've owned the 45mm, the 80mm f2.8 N, the 150mm f3.5 N and the 210mm f4 N.
The best of them is also the cheapest! The 80mm f2.8 N.
Its at least as sharp, if not sharper, than some pretty good 35mm format 80-85mm lenses and has great contrast too. Its also cheap to buy, compact, lightweight and very well made...Thats why its the only one I still own!
I only stopped using it when I got my faster CZ 85mm f1.4 Planar T*. |

Here are samples of photos taken using a 35mm Mamiya Sekor C, 80mm Mamiya Standard lens, and 210mm Mamiya telephoto with a Fotodiox converter (Mamiya M645 lenses to fit Nikon/Fuji DSLR). I used a Fuji S5 Pro camera.
(1) 35mm Mamiya M645 lens
(2) 80mm Mamiya M645 lens
and (3) 210mm Mamiya M645 lens
Thanks for looking! |

Okay thanks aniramca and DSG. The adapter's arrived but I've not yet been motivated - guess I'm waiting for some sparkling autmun weather - to go and play. _________________ I used to think digital was fun but then I discovered film, then I found old lenses and then, eventually I found rangefinders.

I took my new purchase out yesterday.
Shots were taken on my 7D, adapted Mamiya 645 120mm macro.
100% crop.
The lens takes some interesting macro shots, 1:1 on medium format, don't know what the equivalent crop is on my aps-c sensor.
hehe, look at the bug hiding under the branch |

Generally speaking, the wideangles (3.5/35mm, 2.8/45mm) are not worth to be used with FF DSLRs, the 1.9/80mm and 2.8/80mm lenses are quite OK stopped down, the 3.5/150mm and the 4/210mm are comparable to very good "ordinary" (=FF) vintage MF lenses, and the 4/120mm Macro and the 5.6/300mm are outstanding.

'Where'd it go, where'd it go...' . I hope you're thinking of putting that on a stock site somewhere. It might help towards your new purchase. |
