Does anyone know of a simple explanation why a M42 to EOS AF confirm adaptor will work fine on an EOS 400D but throw up an err 01 on a 5D mk3? I've tried cleaning the contacts as the camera suggests but still joy. In general googling around the web there seem to be some horror stories of these things frying the electronics in the camera, are they just horror stories or do they have some base in fact?

The firmware on the chip is outdated. Buy a new one supports your 5D mk3.

^^^ what calvin83 said. You should yank the dandelion chip out of your adapter and use it as non-AF adapter. And on to (if you really need AF confirm) get a new, with updated firmware.
