In term of focusing and dof , 1.4 is difficult to master anyway. I stopped looking for a 50 1.4 sharp WO. |
Exactly.
From my personal observation only KMZ Zenitar-M 50/1.7 and Rollei HFT Planar 50/1.8 are usable wide-open. |

Pancolar 50 f1.8 is also good option for a wide open good performance lens. I had the Rikenon 55 f1.4 with flat rear element, it's a good lens, it can be perfectly used wide open in an aps-c 16mpx sensor. I also had a Chinon 55 f1.4 that I believe is a good performer too. Any of them have the general sharpness of a Pentax 50 f1.2 (wich is the lens I use to compare all others). Neither Pancolar has the resolution at f1.8 or f2 that the Pentax has at f1.4.

Interesting, my CZJ Pancolar MC 50/1.8 must be a lemon. It's wide-open sharpness is kind of disappointing.

There was a post showcasing the Konica Hexanon AR 57 f/1.2 which has outstanding wide open results. For those in search of wide open performance.
Another very good 50 f/1.4 prime is the Nikon Nikkor-SC. My current favorite Japanese nifty-fifty. (Haven't tried any CZ or Russian lenses yet.)
It has no weaknesses.

As for the 55 f/1.4 being discussed, here's a wide-open sample from the Mamiya/Sekor flat-rear version, which is the same lens by Tomioka.

My copy of the Sears isn't that good wipe open, with a touch of veiling flare. By f/2 it's nice and sharp.
