Don't know if this is the best section where to post but I think many of you still don't know that the US Library of Congress has started to upload part of its photo archive to Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/

Apart the great shots one can find there (many are made by Pros) is also very interesting to see good scans of photos that are over 50 years old.

For example who said that pre-war lenses weren't good for color?:

It's also very nice to see how film slides did pass through the age test. The colors are very different than the ones we're accostumed to see today, they tend toward the pastel side but the skin and the sky colors are about the best I've ever seen.
To me it was very refreshing browising through these images.

In my experience some of pre-war lens are trully exceptional , perform same or better than made after war.

Fro example Carl Zeiss Biotar 7,5cm f1.5, Meyer-Optik Görlitz 18,5cm f3.5 these to perfect for color captures. I think if a lens quality lens even if made for b&w cameras perfect for color captures too.

There may be some Levels adjustment or some minor processing, but all in all I would think these are fairly accurate. The Library of Congress goes to great lengths to preserve history. I have worked in the main buildings in Washington, DC and it is truly amazing inside.

I used to lend money to Kodak and as such attended a dinner in the Eastman Kodak Library. They have done an incredible job of keeping samples and records as well as a great collection of photographs. The internet was almost made for organizations like these to provide perpetual shows available to all
