My first real macro shots of this season - of course with the Voigtländer Apo-Lanthar 125mm f/2.5 SL. It can't possibly get any sharper than this?

Perhaps can't sharper , but so many cheaper reach this level. Nice series !
Basically all macro lens is very sharp.

Of course, I have paid a premium for the last 5% of performance. I have basically tried all macro lenses that Pentax has ever made (around that focal length and shorter), but none of them came close to what the Voigtländer achieved here. Not at a per-pixel level and not in the CA department. No more upgrades for me here... I've finally found the ultimate one.

Congrats Peter, excellent!

There are two groups of people funny enough, the one who think that no other lens reaches the Apo Lanthar,
and the ones who think that it is as sharp as any other good macro lens - and the difference is: to have one.

........but has spotmatic posted any shots using his other macro lenses, I'm sure with his experience they would be just as good esp on a computer screen.

Many thanks, guys & gals!

By the way: what's a Haley position? Sorry if I'm a little ignorant Smile

About the quality of macro lenses: let me be clear that most macro lenses are indeed very, very good. For most people these lenses are more than good enough, and experienced macrographers will be able to squeeze the best out of them. On web sizes the differences cannot easily be seen.

However, the more experienced a macrographer gets, the more issues he/she will run into. If you know what you're looking for, then the Apo-Lanthar is just that little bit better - the difference between a very good and a great macro lens is just a hairline thin, but the differences are definitely there.

In the end it just boils down to this: a Volkswagen Jetta will drive you safely through curvy mountain roads, but in a Lotus Elise the driving experience will be completely different. That, in a nutshell, is the difference between a very good and a superb macro lens.
