Having just relubed my first helical, I spent quite some time searching for a tool to apply the grease in a thin, uniform layer. I've read tips on using toothpicks and other hard, non-absorbing tools/materials, which all sounded way to fiddly to me. What I ended up using turned out to be just perfect for the job; keyboard swabs:
They act as a soft brush, which absorbs or releases grease depending on how hard you press. Press lightly to apply a thick coating of grease, press harder and the grease is absorbed into the pad. They are lint free and can also be used to remove old grease.
I have them for removing metal shavings from lens and camera mounts (from mounting/unmounting lenses, grinding metal in the process), and thought I'd try them for grease application as well. Highly recommended, should be available at well-stocked office supply stores. Obviously, you want to avoid the ones that are pre-soaked in ethanol, get dry ones instead. _________________ Sony A7R and wildly varying flora of lenses |
