Carsten one of my brothers lives near Maidstone and I went to school in East aaa. That whole area is to die for scenery. But then so is where I now live and where many of our contributors live. It's great to be able to share this affection for where we live.
In another post I mentioned diversity on this forum - places, people, cultures, cameras. lenses, styles, languages, und so fort. Great fun

In this time of globalization, I always strive for images like this and for people who is interested in the traditions.

There was one time when people who is interested in traditions were considered too conservative. I think that the time has made justice of this preconception. Now we clearly see where the so called progress leads: to a world where every place will be the same. But what is worse: the assimilation will happen at the lowest minimum common level: not Shakespeare Leonardo and Goethe, but McDonalds television and videogames.

Wherever I go, I always look for what is genuine and traditional: from food to culture, I want to learn where the true heart of the place I go, is. Many people who visit Budapest, go to the night life. I took Monica to a show of traditional Hungarian dances. Sure, it is not what they really were - but, at least, it's better than nothing.

I am assaulted by discomfort when I think of people who takes many airplanes and want to go always to the same hotel chain throughout the world. Like, to go to a totally fake, commercial show city like Hong Kong, to live in residential villages that are exactly IDENTICAL like in Costa Smeralda, or Costa Azzurra, or California, or Las Vegas. And, to find it exciting.

Should I ever go to China, I will go to deep China. Should I ever go to the USA Southwest, I will visit the natural places and the little cities. Never go to Las Vegas.

I consider myself a photographer in arms, to defend the traditions, save the images of what remains in the world of today, to testify our own traditions.
Traditions are our richness. Not the money. When we meet with foreign people, also online, we share and we exchange. But what will we exchange in the future, if everyone of us, living in the opposite corners of the world, will have the same landscape, the same culture, the same "globalized traditions"?

I am preparing my weapons. Another ancient authentic tradition to defend: the Carnevale. Coming soon. God only knows for how much still.
There used to be a very ancient competition, in Soragna, a town not distant from here. A competition that was going on since at least a couple of centuries. The competition for the longest nose. A stupid thing one may think. But that was something that came from the authentic agricultural culture of our past. Last year, they made the last edition. The young people is not interested anymore. And the old people can't go on with this forever.
Another little piece of our identity that is lost forever. And I never photographed it once.

I am completely with you. The expression we use for sinking to the bottom of the cultural heap is "lowest common denominator", and it is driving everything nowadays. Records of our cultural past were initially done by cavemen and cave paintings. Then painting and sculpture, then mainly painting and sketching and for the past 100 years or so - photography. So much of what has vanished is only reachable through the pictures left by people who cared. Here in the US the white man in his greed almost wiped out an entire nation, but photographs by people like Brady managed to retain some trace of what was. Hopefully some wiser persons than us will say "Stop, making money is too expensive".

Carsten - I suspect the local authorities and planning permits was a large part of that Starbucks design process. I recall a massive fight in Rome when McD decided it had to put one of their junk shops at the foot of the Spanish Steps and they could not understand why anyone would object to a large yellow arches in full view. My town has very strict zoning rules and as a result we have no junk food stores in the main street - but almost unique in the US.
