I've just stumbled on this group during my research on old Primoplans. I didn't know there were that many people interested in MF lenses... I've been using old M42 lenses on my Contax RTS for years, and now am bolting them on my Canon 40D with the Ef-s manual focus screen. Anyway:

I just acquired this lens on eBay:

I'll be disassembling this lens when I get back from my honeymoon in Italy (will be lugging around some old non AI Nikkors to attach to my 40D) and will need to gently re-polish the front element myself with some optical grade cerium oxide, or send it out. Any suggestions on this?

Also, I'll be re-greasing the helical, most likely with the lightest weight helical grease from Micro Tools.

I was wondering if anyone on this list knows what size filter this lens takes? It does seem if you even have a hint of light fall on the front element, you get veiling flare, so I'll want a hood...would it be ironic if I also put a multi-coated filter on this uncoated lens? Smile

Also, does anyone know of a place where I could find the production date? I'm sure it's probably pre-1940. The serial number is 836939.

You can see pix of the lens, and the first shot thru the Primoplan here:

By the way, some of the stuff I've sold on Ebay was purchased by peeps on this forum! How cool is that?

Welcome Eugene.
I bought your ML 21 3.5 Off of Ebay. You will find a lot of fun at this forum. As for the primoplan. It is an interesting lens and not terribly common. Pretty soft images of average character. Better maybe to leave it original. Polishing is a risky bizzo. On the other hand Early coating are thin. It should take little effort to remove it. The real risk is in handling the loose element. Best of luck and enjoy your stat.

Andy

I saw that! It's a small world!
