I decided not to sell this lens.

I have played around with it a little and either it's me or this lens does really not show any kind of distortion!
The Tessar seems to be very nice and useful at times.

Any experiences with it?

That's exactly the lens I have. The one from the "opinion wanted" post. It is very sharp all the way to edges! I just don't like the bokeh as much as other lenses.....

I like the tessars in general. Looks like you have one of the 'newer' ones that probably has 6 blades and auto aperture. They are good designs which have pretty acceptable center/edge performance, just a bit slow for a standard.

I prefer the older chrome versions. I believe my version has 12 blades and is preset. Here are several samples wide open:

It may not be the sharpest lens in the world, but it does have character, which I know you appreciate!

Yes it's sometimes difficult to concentrate on the lens' performance Wink

There is a lot of different tessars in the world, i see.

My tessar is only Aluminium.

My demand - what is the different between the black and the aluminium?

Alu-Tessar:
The ring to manipulate the visor is on the front.
It was made in Germany (BRD?).
I see a low yellow discoloration in pictueres.
I love the portraiture of this lens.

have a good one

Peter

Wonderfull !

Yesterday, I made a test.

The motiv is not good, but i can lay down the cam.

left, you see the old tessar, in the middle the new pentax kit zoom (cheap) and right the new pentax fa 50/1,4 (very good sharpness - but not excellent)

the visor was 5.6

this tessar-lense is supersharp

My question:

What ist the quality different between the aluminium and the black lens?

How old is my lens, is there a link to a history list of zeiss jena lenses?

Silver lens is contrast less than black one, made around 1950-1960

Highlights would be rounder. Black versions have 6 blades, chrome have 12.

Take a Pancolar 50mm too Smile

The "black" version is definitly more contrasty ! I have 5 copies of "alu" (preset , auto , axakta) and 4 copies of the black . It is a wonderful lens , like the industar ! Attila , I have a Pancolar too , but I prefer the global rendition of a schneider xenon. I have also the "old pancolar" , the Flexon 2/50 .

Yes, Tessar can be great lenses - not all round lenses, I mean, not lenses that are good for all occasions. Not really predictable. They give surprises, this is the best thing I like about them, when I open a picture made with an old Tessar I know I am always ready for a surprise. The same can be said about Biotar. At least for me. They are surprise lenses.

Here is my Tessar-copy (see also http://forum.mflenses.com/tessar-3-5-50-t6664.html ).

It should be equal to the black versions because of it´s T-coat and the smaller minimum aperture (3.5).

Today i get this Lens.

It seems to be a tessar 2,8/50 too.
Only jena and the Sign T show up, this lens come from Zeiss.
Obout Retro´s link I find this website:

http://www.praktica-collector.de/Tessar_2.8_50_Jena_DDR.htm
That is the same lens, whit the same composition.

Tomorow i will insert some testpictures.

To Retro:
Please, show me (us) some Pictures from Tessar 3,5/50, the Lens look´s very veteran

So many kind´s of tessars, it´s incredible.
I think, there are 10 different types of tessar, I see.

Is pentacon a affiliated company to Zeiss?

regards Peter

Yes, Peter. The "T" stands for "Tessar".

PostPosted: Mon Apr 21, 2008 4:15 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

There was a time during the legal battles between Zeiss East and Zeiss West, when the two companies reached an agreement to share the markets, and Jena lenses produced for the West markets were agreed not to carry the "Zeiss" name and neither the classic lens scheme names such as "Tessar", "Sonnar", etc.
So those lenses were labeled "aus Jena" and with T or S in stead of the lens names.
I have some aus Jena lenses and I could compare them with the "Carl Zeiss Jena", and in all cases I have found the "aus Jena" to be better copies. Whether this was casual, or it's because the western market lenses were given a better IQ control, it's open to discussion.
