Please, show me (us) some Pictures from Tessar 3,5/50, the Lens look´s very veteran

Veteran. Yes. That´s what I like. I do not "really" need another 50mm-lens but I like to collect this nostalgic things.
For demo-pictures or comparisons with it I have not time. Maybe I can deliver some in a few weeks.

Yes, Peter. The "T" stands for "Tessar".

Sorry: this is not true.
Red "T" stands not for "Tessar" (so this is tempting to assume) but ""Transparenz" due to its coating-layer.
My source: Stapf, Helmut. 1955. Fotografische Praxis. Leipzig: FV Fachbuchverlag. Seite 66:
"...Die so behandelten Objektive tragen verschiedentlich ein besonderes Kennzeichen. Zeiss, Jena bezeichnet sie mit einem roten "T" (= Transparenz) auf der Objektivfassung, die Firma Leitz, Wetzlar, durch den Buchstaben "B"; andere Firmen bringen ein rotes "V" an. Der T-Belag schimmert bläulich bis rotviolett..."
BTW: my old metallic "Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar 50/2.8" has a red triangle to indicate this quality-coating.

@Orio:

So those lenses were labeled "aus Jena"

Yes, there was a juristical fight between eastern and western Krautland, which the western Krauts won. http://www.pentaconsix.com/jena.htm
So for the export even the expression "Carl Zeiss Jena" was forbidden and only "aus Jena" allowed. For the consumption in the DDR (GRD) the old name with "Carl Zeiss" could be used. Some people claim, that for export the IQ control would be have been better. I cannot deny or verify this.

Myself, because I have seen a few Jena lenses. Wink

At the time this lens was made (the black barrel with orange writing fashion is the last and final of the Jena lenses), Carl Zeiss Jena had already stopped to use the "T" to signify the coating, and already adopted the "MC" writing (initially white, then always red).

On top of that, the MC writing always precedes the name of the lens, and it's never placed directly before the aperture/lenght numbers. Which, instead, is the typical position they placed the shortening for the lens model.

The results of the Jena DDR

100 percent size:

It´s a good lens, only the mechanic is too attrite, but this is a good sign for a good lens.

Care to expound on this? Is your meaning that the lens is worn and well used?

Nice photos. The bike surely does 'pop'!

the light on the bike is odd Shocked not one shadow did you flash? Please do tell.

PostPosted: Wed Apr 23, 2008 8:37 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Yes, I flash by the bike.

The used mechanic show me, that this lens had to work.
So the last owner was contend.

If I get a lens, and the lens is old but look´s new, then I know, this could be a worse type (like my hanimex 35mm)

there is another picture from the jena T50/2,8

In the right corner by the orange cable, I think the sensor had problems with the light-angle.

I just won this based on the discussion here, not that I need another 50s. It's a 3.5, not 2.8, I hope it's good. The seller listed as Zeiss Ikon but in a reply stated that it's a screw mount.

I was hoping to get the 135/3.5 Sonnar from the same seller, but lost on that one. Oh well, hopefully I can use this one. It was for only USD10+ship.

$10 is a great price for that.

Bawang - "garlic" in Tagalog. Pinoy ka ba ?

PostPosted: Mon May 05, 2008 4:49 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I thought the price is very good too. I actually retracted my bid after noticing the listing description says that it was for Ikon, but after retracting the seller email saying it was screwmount.

bawang for onion as in Bahasa Malaysia, close but no cigar Smile We refer to garlic as 'bawang putih', literally white onion.

Does Pinoy ka ba mean ... how are you? In Bahasa Malaysia it's Apa khabar? There must be some relationship between the two languages.

Dp you have any Tessars or CZJs? I got a Zebra Flek (aus Jena) which has not been mounted for 1 1/2 months since getting the Zuiko 24, Tak 85 and Vivitar S1 90mm. I guess the season call for more macro shots. Like have been said by others, the Zeiss has this certain attributes that make you just love the IQ....Zeiss myth? I dunno. I only have one Zeiss, but I like it already.

Cheers/Peace!

"Pinoy ka ba ? " - Are you Filipino ? Pinoy is Tagalog slang for Filipino.

Yep, these are related languages, missed it by inches !

I have Zeiss lenses for my Exaktas, Pancolar and Biotar 50's.

The poor Exaktas are not in good shape, sorry to say. I got the fast speeds running on one, more or less, and its in my bag to use next time I get the chance.

Hallo Bawang!

Welcome in the world of the lens-passion.

You won a good len´s, of course.

Which Cam will be used ?

regards Peter

Thanks padiej.

In my case, I think it's more like a disease instead of passion, Smile I am a graduate student trying to finish my PhD. My hard earned grad student income (which is way, way below poverty) is going to the wonderful MF lenses. Yikes! But I am enjoying every bit of it....that's why it's a disease! I should have discovered you guys 3 years ago when the MF lens price is still cheap.

I am hoping that it will be a lens I use a lot. I have the Helios 44-2 which was my introduction to Europe/Russian lens and like a disease, I am beginning to slowly increase the collection.

It'll be used on a Canon 20D, which I hope will be upgraded....one day Smile I sold my beloved 1984 LA Olympic collectors edition Canon F1N some 3-4 years ago and got the 20D, used.

luisalegria, I am a Malaysian sojourn in Midwest USA.

Cheers/Peace.

Hi bawang.

I am an immigrant from the Philippines living in California.

The languages of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are related, but its not that close, other than some words (Puti, Bawang are two). Even in the Philippines where there are many languages people from different regions can't understand each other.

I received the Tessar this week and finally the sky cleared up, after 2-3 days of rain, for some quick shots at the community garden near my apartment. In fact it was too bright.

It's a preset full alu body with a gazillion blades (I have only 10 fingers). The focusing ring is pretty stiff but will rotate with some strength, with a pipe wrench on the scalloped ring, it would probably made it smooth like the Takumars Smile

All pics were handheld direct export from aperture to flickr.

Judging by the samples below, I am going to like this one. Unfortunately, I am still light years from producing as good as those images taken by Orio using this baby.

#1 Flare sample

#2 Leaves and brick wall, taken by my 10 year old daughter on the opposite side of the one above with the flare. It was amazing looking at her trying to focus the Tessar.

#3 Statute

#4 Another leaves and wall.

Just a bit of silicon oil (you can find it in the bycicle shops) carefully put inside the lens where there's the focus screw and many of my stiff lenses now are smoother than a brand new Canon L.

Hallo bawang!
The bukeh of the bricks is amazing, the lens is great. I think, the charakter of the pictures of tessar is fine, sharp and soft in the same time, it´s perfect.
Silicon Oil is a good Idea, then the lens is like new.

Hope for more pictures.

regards Peter

Tessar, Super lens, not matter if it's alum, black, zebra, F/3,5 or 2,8 (may be 3,5 better center pictures), Never was MC (nor the Y/C 45 mm 2,8 tessar was). The tessar oberkochen - for the contarexand previos contaflex, but both were different lens and same design- had better mechanical and reflex treatment, but not MC. The lenses with only 3, 4 or 5 elements sometimes haven't MC (with exceptions : the last takumar 35 mm 3,5). Tessar is a Zeiss design of 1908 - I belive, it was subsequent to the 1890 planar type. 4 elements in 3 groups ( 2 elements at front and 2 in one group at rear). Anothers lenses with this design: Skopar (voigtlander), Ektar (kodak), Xenar (Schneider), etc. It was an improvement of the triplet (3 elements) : Pantar (Zeiss), domiplan (meyer), reomar (Schneider), etc.
Tessar, a great lens in the history of the photography. Enjoy this!!
Ah.. all the pictures ar excelent. Congratulations.
