Perhaps it was cleaned from fungus or/and lens elements replaced.

Hi
This is common with some Nikon lenses as well as others. What you are seeing is the paint lifting off the glass at the edge. Nikon paints the edge of the some elements on some lenses that do not have a big lip to cover them. This paint will often bubble off the glass but have no way of actually pealing off. This is the effect you see. There is no real cause for concern. If you google this condition you may find many other folks who have had the same problem and confused it with fungus. For now you look safe as this will not effect your images in any way.

The best way to avoid this is to buy Contax lenses Twisted Evil

As stated by others, it doesn't look like fungal infection. I would say it's a kind of Schneideritis -- a benign disease that affects many large format Schneider lenses, hence the name. Just google "scchneideritis", you will get plenty of info.

Cheers!

I go along with lifting paint too, but it looks from the pics as though it's on the metal rim, not on the glass. (Hope I'm seeing it right!). I think it's caused by corrosion of the aluminium causing white powdery oxide under the paint.

If anyone's got any Nikkors suffering friom this dangerous disease I'll look after them for you Wink

It could be a form of electrolysis, where two or more dissimilar metals are in contact. There could be some type of metal in the paint and it reacts with the metal of the body. Just a thought, we see it where steel and copper pipes come in contact with each other.

That's called bimetallic (or galvanic) corrosion, but I think this lens just has some glue deteriorating, like someone said earlier.

There is no reason to be concerned about increasing Contax lens prices. They are already high.... Shocked

No, no ! If compare quality and price ratio and compare with AF lenses, they are not high at all. Just here you can buy a Carl Zeiss 85mm f2.8 Contax lens for 200 EUR! What you can buy for 200 EUR what kind of AF lens ?

I got a Planar 1.4/50 from a shop for £80 GBP and the same shop also had a Planar 1.7/50 for £40 GBP.

Not expensive for what you get in IQ and I wouldn't get the nearest equivalent Canon EF50/1.2L for 80 quid.... Laughing

ffordes.com have E+ planar 50:1.7 from £35 GBP (45 euros)
maybe in 3 years the best 50mm will cost £10 and will still be considered expensive luxury Rolling Eyes

Yes, I saw that one - it's ironic that at the moment you can get a Zeiss Oberkochen Planar 50 cheaper than a Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50. Confused

Historical justice for Carl Zeiss Jena Wink

The 50 mm Planar is good to have. they are real bargains. Same is perhaps the 135mm sonnar, but for the Distagons you can spend a lot....or take the 85 mm planar....
At eXXy in Germany the most Contax glass goes with fixed prices, no more bidding. And these prices are at the upper limit of the range. The sellers know what they have. That was at least my impression in the last weeks. OK compared to new glass from CaNikOlyPent, that could still be affordable, but not for me.

have fun
