There is also an Industar 50 which is Black and has an M39 mount with (presumably) a 45.2 mm register - but I can't find a link for this one. And I think that you can find silver with a black face. There are also rangefinder versions.

Thanks for these links Sichko - I've just found another 50mm to track down for my stable!!!

Thanks Sichko.

And just to add to the information, here is a link from past posts that mentions the top lens portion of RF 50 when is actually M42. I wonder if this can focus to infinity.

http://forum.mflenses.com/industar-50-3-5-50-m39-mount-for-rangefinder-cameras-t6531,highlight,industar.html

I am still waiting for comments on image quality between the two, anyone?

Rino.

Seems like that could be the case - all the silver ones I've seen have been M39.

Thanks for the link. The thread is dated a couple of months before I joined the forum. I'm sure that there are lots of other hidden "gems" - waiting to be discovered.

Sorry, I am late.

Yes, indeed. The 50 has an M39-mount (M39SLR) and works perfectly on an EOS-SLR (you just won't get the last bit to infinity, but it focusses far enough), the 50-2 is the "newer" model and has an M42-mount.

Hey Shrek! GREAT move!

But....a cute little thing?.... Laughing Just watch it kick ass! Very Happy

I'm waiting!

And, I'll have to repeat myself here: I've had photo buffs tell me that it's a "piece of xxxx and ugly to boot"...but all we have to do is produce fine images from the fine glass. Sure, it looks like someone took a saw and cut a "normal" lens in half.... Razz

How does the Industar-61 L/Z MC M42 Zenit lens fit in?
as its another 50mm at f2.8 with the KMZ logo.

To my knowledge, the Industar-61 (M42) is based on the Industar-61 rangefinder lens (design) and is a completely different lens, since it is much bigger than the 50-2 and offers some astounding macro cpabilities.

I think that you need a real Russian lens historian. I must preface anything I say with "AFAIK".

The Industar 50 (-2), along with the Helios 44(-2) was used as the normal "kit" lens for the Zenit SLR cameras. The Industar 61 L/Z (M42 45.5 mm register) appears to be a development of the Industar 61 L/D which was designed for the FED rangefinder camera. The L/D has 39 mm screw fit with a Leica register. I have not seen pictures of an M39 SLR (Zenit) lens although I have seen reference to one.

The "L" stands for Lanthanum one of the metallic elements used in the glass formulation. There is much discussion as to whether or not it is radioactive - and, if so, to what extent.

The 61 L/Z appears to use coated glass although it is not labelled as such. There is a multicoated version (MC).

The lens is sometimes described as a "macro" lens although "close focus" might be better.

Just got myself another bargain, € 10,- for an olympic Zenit E with Industar 50-2 lens. After reading this thread I am so anxious to try it out, I hope I receive it tomorrow!

Can anybody tell me how many aperture blades there are in this little thing?

My example appears to be seven blades.

Enjoy your lens, I think it will constantly surprise you and you will never regret that €10 Very Happy

I had two of them, both had 7 blades, rounded, so f/3.5-f5.6 is almost round.

I was about to buy myself one of those tiny Industars, but yesterday I was going through my collection and sure enough... Rolling Eyes I found a near mint copy on a Revueflex E in one of my forgotten boxes. As if that wasn't enough I also discovered the silver version in the same box (however that one is not in a great shape and frozen completely).

I have an Industar 50/3.5, not Industar-2, black version and M39 thread, and I find it great for freehand macros.

Here is a sample:
Canon EOS 30D, ISO 250, 1/250s (manual mode), built in flash used.
Industar 50/3.5 @ f/8 (or something)

Yes, for long time LEICA had the Elmar 60 mm. for macro.

A lot of macro lenses use the xenotar 5 element schame, similar to rolleiflex 6x6 xenotar.

Is the M39 50 a macro only lens in DSLR or can it also be a normal 50mm lens?

Any advantage of having M39 version instead of M42 and vice versa?

Depends on which kind of M39. If you're talking about a LTM, then yes, it can only be used for macro. But, M39 lenses made for SLRs (Zenit, specifically) have near identical register as M42 lenses (with differing reports, but the only M39 lens I have, Helios-44, does infinity fine on my K20D), so you can use it as a normal lens, with an M39-M42 adapter ring.

I can't see any merit of having M39 over M42, except for being able to use it on M39 Zenits. I bought my Helios-44 not because I wanted the M39 or I wanted to use it with a Zenit (although I am, since the lens came with the camera Laughing ), but because that was the only version that has 13-bladed aperture.
