So neither did the M42 side fit my lens nor did the EOS side fit my shift adapter. I guess the M42 adapter was made for a camera not for another adapter.
Anyways, I just want to verify that if I purchased the following adapters, would my problem be solved?

And it may be I worry too much, but I would choose a black adapter to minimize the possibility of unwanted reflections.
Also, I see the Fotodiox adapter listing shows the adapter mounted on a Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar which has open aperture metering hardware on its mount. In most cases I'm happy to use a M42 to EF adapter with a flange / lip to depress the stop down pin. But in the case of M42 lenses which have open aperture metering hardware, my own flanged adapter rubs against the mentioned hardware making it difficult to move the aperture ring.
My solution was to simply buy another M42 to EF adapter which didn't have the stop down flange / lip.
Perhaps the Fotodiox flanged adapter has no such issue? I don't know. My adapter is a no name from China which I found on ebay.
Here are my two adapters and a Pentax S-M-C lens with the conflicting hardware highlighted:

Just a quick question. Are there male and female versions of adapters? Is that what happened here?

Yes, "infinity focus" and "manual control of aperture" as advertised both are impossible! (flange distance of EOS EF of 44mm being less than M42 45.46mm, and EOS EF lens larger diameter no way to mount inside M42 opening to allow infinity focus. Only possible if adapter has lens element -- this one does not!)

m42 lens to EOS-camera is probably the most common adapter around.
This EF to m42-camera is first one I ever seen.

In a way yes, usually adapters will mount lenses from a longer registration system onto bodies of shorter registration.
Each mount will have both male & female versions - usually male on the lens & female on the body but I think there are a few obscure exceptions to that.
In some cases the reverse of the standard adapter is available with optical elements to allow infinity focus or for macro/close focus use only.
There are some further complications with screw mounts as some of them are readily available as helicoids (M42 is the most common variant here) Specialshort M42 adapters are made for mounting helicoids - I have an e-mount one which is over 25mm too short for mounting M42 lenses. - It seems manufacturers are at last starting to produce adapters for the other end of the helicoid. In time no doubt the listings will make this clearer.
I must admit I think EF is a strange choice for putting on a helicoid as the lens needs electronic signals to adjust aperture & focus. But I suppose it is a very popular mount. |
