Taken in 1998, going into the harbor by liberty boat from USS Belleau
Wood LHA-3 (not the ship pictured, obviously). This is a scan from an
Olympus 35 pic.

Looking like sea state was a little bit uncomfortable. Impressive and dramatic picture.

Agree with Michael, dramatic picture really.

Thanks, guys. This pic, I had to crop some of it to level the sea and
buildings. The original slants to the left from level because the little boat
I'm in is 24-30 feet in length and those waves are running 3-5 feet in
size. I've gone into HK by liberty boat 4 times and it's always choppy
like this. The 5th time we tied to the pier in Kowloon, May 6th 1999. I
remember the date because we got a pretty cold welcome (this was our
vacation cruise for 6 months in the Persian Gulf). But that day we had
mistakenly bombed a building in Bosnia that had 3 Chinese civilians in
it. Our Intel really screwed the pooch that time. I get up to my hotel
room in Kowloon and turn on the TV and angry Chinese are throwing all
kinds of stuff at the embassies (Brit and US) in Beijing, burning our flags,
etc. Wasn't the fun 5 days off we expected, but some Chinese were
cordial. Sorry, boring story...

No, far from boring. This was an event we saw in TV, I remember it. Very unreal from our point of view, although this area isn't so far away. It's interesting to listen to experiences someone made who was indirectly involved. A "normal" person, no politician or journalist. Thanks for sharing your impressions.

Gorgeous colours in that sunset Bill. Did you scan it from the negative? If so you did a great job of recovering the colours.

I was at HK at the end of April last year, so the picture and your story about Kowloon pier brings back memories, although we didn't get any sunsets like yours. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Nathan Road in Kowloon. This was at the pier:

Peter, this was scanned from a picture. My wife has all my old negatives
stored neatly away (at least most of them) where I haven't found them
yet, and she's in Thailand. Sad I got some pics of riding on the Star
Ferry, too. Can't remember the hotel I stayed, but it would be an indie
or small chain rather than the big ones, like Marriott, Conrad Hilton, etc.
My fave in SG was the Concorde which has been remodeled, added on
to, and now is this big swollen Holiday Inn.

Off to do some shooting, you guys have a nice Easter!

I've been wanting to post this picture for some time. This was taken in Hong Kong last year too.

It's an old tree with its roots still in the ground. Either they have dug out the soil underneath the tree and supported it on steel beams, or it has been lifted up or transported to this position. Either way, I thought it was very interesting.

Also, for anyone interested, the scaffolding around the building behind the tree consists entirely of bamboo poles lashed together with plastic cable ties.

Nice pic, Peter! I got to find my HK photos. The one I posted here is
either from the Kowloon side Star Ferry pier, or I was on the Star
Ferry when I took it. The ones that I have coming into HK by liberty
boat show most of the harbor with all the big name hotels ringing it.
There's a little military installation right on the water, painted white
where we would dock, run by Brits. Do you know where I'm talking
about, Peter?

These pics gotta be around here somewhere, and some are really nice...

Bill and Peter!

I like your shots a lot. Some kind of rangefinder style.
