I now have a Manfrotto 484RC2 ballhead on one of these sticks. It supports up to a 4kg load and the weight is not too bad. The 482 was too flimsy, with a load of only 2kg; the 486 is huge and unbalances the stick.

Gitzo magnesium models were twice the price and with less choice of sizes.

I got two qr plates, one for the camera and one for the 300mm from Richard, which will hopefully arrive tomorrow.

I use the same head on a Manfroto monopod and it easily supports the D200 & my 80-200 2.8 ED so it should be fine.

Forgetting photography for a fleeting second, do the poles help you with your back and knee problems Chris? I'm beginning to get a touch of arthritis in my hips.

Yes. One pole helps a bit (as a walking stick) while two poles is much better, especially (for me) going down hills, which tends to put a strain on my knees, or going over rougher ground where the extra stability and confidence means I don't tense up as much so it helps my back too. Lastly it seems to result in less jarring, which might be a help in your case as well.

I hadn't really mentioned my back here since others have worse problems I am sure, but I was in fact off work for two weeks with it and in bed for one week of that. Its improved now. Two weekends ago I was out on a trip and used them, they helped quite a bit and it was my first trip out after being ill (and still with a back brace and woozy-making meds). Last weekend I did not use them, and regretted it.

The only trouble is that with two hands on the poles there is no spare hand for the camera (and I tend not to use a neck strap, by preference).

My commiserations on the arthritis - my mum (and late grandma) both were severely affected by rheumatoid arthritis.

Oh, thank you, but it isn't really bad, not yet at least. Walking slowly (shopping speed Smile) makes my hips hurt - I tend to march on ahead and then stop to wait. Losing some more weight will help, I need to listen to Bill.

So sorry to hear about your back pain, it's really debilitating. Hope it clears up soon.

A neck strap isn't too bad - I nearly always use one out of habit. I need my hands for other tasks when I'm at work and it was just too cumbersome to keep putting the SLR away in a bag and carry it around. (These days I mostly use a P&S that fits in my jacket pocket). The problem with a strap I found is that the camera swings about and gets a few knocks. A quick-release tie strap clipped to my belt buckle kept it steady enough.
