I just got this. I bid on the lens one month ago. The winner did not pay. Is it a good price. I don't have expertise in this lens. I know many here own it. What do you think Confused

The Biotar 58 is the "father" of the Helios-44
meaning that the Helios-44 is a copy of the Biotar.

The Biotar is a prestigious lens from Zeiss history, it is surely worth keeping for a collection.
I don?t remember now which camera are you using, but if it's a 5D, then the Biotar 58 will not clear the mirror.

Hi Orio
I use the 40D. I suppose I should just get it. The price would be about $75 including shipping. I thought I had made my last purchase for the year already. I guess I was wrong Rolling Eyes Do you think that this is a good price. The seller claims it is in excellent condition. His photos are suspect however. Thanks Andy

It can be found for less. Or not, depending on the mood of the ebayers.
OK if I had to choose, I would probably go for a Helios-44. It can be bought for 5-10 USD and the performance is at least the same, if not even better.

OK thanks. I will ask seller for a better picture. I can not understand sellers like this. He only sells photo gear and has a terrible photo of items. It always makes me suspicious.

Just go for the Helios. You'll save a lot of money for a probably better lens. It's never good to buy from suspicious sellers and the Bitoar 58 is not that "unforgettable" lens that you can't live without.

OK I'll pass. I'm not a collector of these types of lenses so "original make" is not important to me. There is no hurry for me to get another lens in this Focal Length. I just bought a Summicron 50 f2 yesterday, I'm sure it will keep me busy when it arrives. Thanks for helping me decide. Andy

I have one Summicron 50 for sale, we could have arranged something off ebay... oh well.

I bought mine for under $160. The price was why I got it. Yours is much later and worth more than I could spend. Here is the one I got. Click here to see on Ebay

Yeah... yours is a first version. But on the 40D does not really matter, as the Leica first versions are usually weaker in the corners and this will not show up on the 40D.
On the contrary, you may benefit from the reportedly smoother bokeh of the first version.
