Hello, I've just joined the forum and am interested in consolidating my Pentax MF lens collection. I currently own a Pentax *istDS DSLR.

After a minor bout of 'LBA' I am now planning on settling on a few (half a dozen or so) lenses and have just recently acquired several Pentax M42 mount lenses from a friend who may wish to sell them. (I have a M42 to 'K' mount adapter)

I realise there is already a similar thread running but I would like a little advice.

The M42's on loan are as follows...

SMC Takumar 28mm/3.5
SMC Takumar 35mm/3.5
SMC Takumar 105mm/2.8
Super-Takumar 135mm/2.5 (not specified as SMC)

The one that probably interests me the most is the 105mm/2.5 and maybe the 35mm/3.5. The catch is I may have to purchase the lot as I don't think the current owner is interested a separating them.

The 135mm/2.5 is not designated as being Super-Multi-Coated but is a Super-Takumar.

They are all in good condition and have a very smooth precise focussing action compared to my 'A' Series lenses.

What I currently have...

Primes:
SMC Pentax-A 28mm/f2.8 (Have some doubts about this one - it may go)
SMC Pentax-K 28mm/f3.5 - Waiting to arrive
SMC Pentax-A 50mm/1.4
Nikkor 85mm/f2.0 AIS (Modified - to fit 'K' mount)
Vivitar 'Series 1' 105mm/f2.5 - 1:1 Macro (Made by Kiron)

Zooms:
SMC Pentax-A 35-105mm/f3.5 Macro Zoom
Vivitar 'Series 1' 70-210mm/F2.8-4.0 'KA' (Made by Komine) - Waiting to arrive

I realise there is some duplication here, especially with the 28mm's, but at least one will go.

Could someone please advise me on what is a fair price to pay for the M42's? - Thanks

Hi and welcome!

I have these Asahi/Pentax lenses:

- Pentax-M SMC 2.8/28 (PK)
- Asahi SMC Takumar 3.5/35 (M42)
- Asahi Super-Takumar 1.4/50 (M42)
- Pentax-M SMC 1.7/50 (PK)
- Asahi Super-Takumar 2.8/105 (M42)

And each of these lenses are definitely recommendable.

Hallo Australia!

Melbourne is a wonderfull place, I visit it 1995.

My lens-fever began with a Ist DL too, but now, I use the K100d super with stabilisator.

All of my pentax m lenses are very good, there was a lot of quality by the production.

By using m42 adapter you can put a aluminium folie over the mouth-contact´s and the autofocus system will help you.

My favorite lenses are M 40/2.8 (pancake) and M200/4 (sharp - tube, i love the fine and soft mechanic)

Please send a pic of the wonderfull melbourne beach in combination with a lens test.

regards peter

I agree that ALL of those lenses are certainly a great group to obtain. As far as price, I could only say that you use eBay's "completed items" tool to research a sort of average price.

Also, use the Used Lens Pricing Guide in this forum.

welcome!

The lenses you already have are really nice, and as good or better than the offered ones with overlapping focal lengths, so I would save my money and buy a lens that you can really use. Smile

Except maybe the tak 135mm, if it's the M42 version, it'll be good. The Bayonet version is awful.

Thanks all.

The Takumar 135mm/f2.5 is the M42 version but it says 'Super-Takumar', not 'Super-Multi-Coated'.

I may be wrong but my understanding was the original Takumars were not coated, the Super-Takumars had a single coating and of course the SMC's were multi-coated.

I wasn't looking ,to buy these lenses I was just offered them to try them out. The owner is now literally up to his eyeballs in Leica gear... and I'm not kidding!!

I would really like something at the wider end of the scale for use with my *istDS, like something in the 15-18mm range (24-28mm equivalent on a 35mm)

They all are good lenses, but avoid the one without SMC. I think that you have lots of KA & KM lenses, there will be duplication. I think the Tak M42 are quite cheap in ebay, around USD40-50 each with good condition.
