Vario Sonnar, of course.

Nikkor is usually a good choice.

Tamron, Tokina, etc..

If for Canon AF body, the Canon 28-135 IS AF lens has been in Canon's current lenses list each of these many years since before digital cameras for some reason. Smile

The later MF lenses of 28-135 range are probably better than the older 35-135. Hoya is good.

The only MF 28-135 i know (the Konica / Tokina 28-135mm) is not really a great lens. The Minolta AF 4-4.5/28-135mm is by far better than the Konica/Tokina, and very useful in the 35 ... 100mm range. Stopped down to f11, also 28mm is OK; however resolution @ 135mm is slightly low, compared to good 135mm primes or the nFD 4/80-200mm L.

The Minolta MD-III 35-135mm has very similar characteristics as the MD-III 35-105mm [14L], apart from being is slightly better around f=100mm.

Tamron have a new 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD for Nikon/Canon DSLR if you will consider an AF lens.

I was impressed by this one. I tested it without purchase since it was fungus infested and decentered. But it was still impressive. Long MFD though.

80cm is decent for the upper part of the zoom range. It has a macro mode of 1:4 at 35mm

All 3 of the tamron adaptalls are worthwhile classic metal'n glass MF lenses: 22A 35-135mm; later 40A 35-135mm; SP 28-135mm. The latter two are distinct from the 22A. 22A has max close focus at the longest focal length. 40A and 28A have a built in extension tube macro mode which gives max reproduction at the shortest focal length. This mode also enables closer focus at all focal lengths. But I don't really rate any of them for close focus compared to eg the 90mm macro, or a sigma superwide II (also 1:4)
IMO there is little between all 3 at 135mm. 28A and 40A have more natural colour rendition (22A is "warm") and are more consistent across the zoom range. 22A is more prone to flare with that big 67mm front end.

Thanks, does anyone have experience with the Nikkor?

i think Kiron 35-135mm is a good option if you consider the price. its cheap and its sharp with good macro. but handling is terrible.

I have not shot the Nikkor, and I think that I had possibly been not encouraged to do so from other people's experience - my memory is vague here.

There is another you might consider, but it is an odd duck.
SMC Pentax 45-125mm F4
Longer at the short end, and shorter at the long end, and because of its strangeness it is overlooked and is cheap.
It is also very good.
Here is some discussion of it:

I have it and like it.

I started MF zooms With an OM2n and a X2 Series one Vivitat 24-48mm. I added a VS1 70-210mm X3, before a Zuiko 50mm. All seemmed excellent lenses for slide film.

Now this discussion is about a X4 35-135mm.

Now i think my first zooms were quite pionering the 24-48mm as X2, but the X2 generally were 35-70mm. The 70-210mm was X3 but not too special except for a fairly wide aperture. Telephoto zooms are beleived to be fairly easy to get right.

Now a few years down the line X3 was old hat but a 35-135mm was probably an interesting compromise. as it guess from slightly wide to telephoto, I have a Minolta 35-105mm But its AF.

Thank you for the opinions.
I will keep an eye out for the Tamron 40a and the Minolta.
Tom, nice photos with the Pentax, but it doesn't go wide enough or close enough for me.
I am still curious about the Nikon, any one with some experience please chime in.

Happy holidays or Merry Christmas to everyone and have a happy new year!

Thank you!

Me too am curious about the Nikkor! Many were sold. The few on eBay look worn from use. I'm thinking might be keeper. Almost curious enough to buy it...

What are you going to use it for?

If an MFD of 1.5m is OK, you might consider the (early) Minolta AF 4-4.5/28-135mm. Well built, it was an extroardinary lens in its days - produced in the legendary Sakai plant along with those lenses that later would become the "G" lineup. A staggering nine of its lenses are made of high refractive glass (nD 1.77 ... 1.84)!

Basically to not have to change lenses and because I am curious about a lens from 35mm to 135mm which isn't
as heavy or big as a 28-135mm. Thank you for the suggestion.

Thank you! for this topic! Curiosity made me buy the Nikkor, with very minor 0.5cm x 0.5mm fungus along edge of one element, for $36. After a little use a few times I like it more and more. IQ is excellent to my primes only eyes. It's built & operates like a Takumar. Nice job Nikon. It was kit lens for legendary F camera(!). Smaller lighter better handling than Canon AF 28-135 IS, and better IQ wide open imho. Photos to follow. Next week should be plenty of light for some real testing, but these preliminary low-light snaps look good! First zoom I like enough to keep - more convenient to carry than 3 primes, almost as good. On 12mp FF 5D. 48mp will likely show bigger difference.

Congratulations!
Hope it turns out to be a good one. I will be curious to see your photos.
In the meantime I found RMC Tokina 35-135 3.5-4.5 in Budapest for 13 dollars so I
decided to give it a try. I still think I will buy a Tamron 40a while I am in the USA to avoid the high shipping prices.
A little funny to have two of this same zoom length, though. Rolling Eyes

Here the weather has not been so great, but here are some from the Tokina.
It also takes me some time to get used to a new lens.
Seems like it might be good.
I cannot remember if any of these were wide open.

Looks like pretty bad weather. Anxious to see some with some sun.
I have not been able to find very much information on this lens either good or bad
although I did find one favorable post finally so I think it will be good.
Thanks for posting some samples.

No 4 and 7 has nice pop up effect. Otherwise great.

It has this typical understated Tokina rendering

Hello, did you try this lens out any more?
I am curious to see some more photos.
